VIN tag is the easiest way. If the shell was re-imported from the US, there should be a metal tag near the lower-left corner of the windshield frame that has the VIN. All 914s should have an engraved VIN number on the top of the right-front wheel house, inside the trunk. All should also have a riveted-in plate in the front trunk on the right-side headlight bucket.
Check here on Jeff Bowlsby's site for pics of the tags and the locations. If some of the interior bits are still present, the ignition switch for 70-71 914-6es should be on the dash to the left of the steering column. The 72 914-6 had a switch on the right of the column itself like the four-cylinder cars did. The motor mount for the -6 is on the firewall, under the engine shelf in the middle. The -6 did not have the two "pods" hanging down where the -4 motor mount bars attached. Here's a pic of the stock 914-6 engine mount on the firewall: ![]() This is taken from inside the engine bay, roughly under the battery tray. A pic of rust, plus you can see the -4 motor mount pod hanging down in the lower-center of the image. The bar across the middle of the opening is a piece that bolts in, and is only used on the 73+ cars. ![]() Note that pretty much any of those things can be changed on a -4 chassis to emulate the -6 one. The Six mount can be welded on, the -4 mount pods can be cut off, the steering column can be switched over... Even the VIN tags can be swapped around--but that is a Federal crime here in the US, and I'm pretty sure is very strongly frowned upon everywhere. --DD

If the paint badge is there then it should not have the chassis # in the upper box, and the paint code in the lower box should have only two digits until late in 1971.
The chassis # in the rear trunk floor should start with 13 and be 5 digits in 1970 & 6 digits in 71 & 72. Give me the numbers to interpret.

Oh, right, I forgot about the hook! I think it would be about 30mm in diameter if it were a full circle. Located on the left side of the chassis, under the car, near the front of the engine bay. I don't have any pics handy, though.
Ouch, I completely forgot about the Tech Article we have here on the site! It shows the hook (with lines attached to it) among other things: Pelican Parts Authenticity Guide to the 914-6 Conversion The photo of the oil lines is taken from directly under the car; in the upper-right corner you can see the outer suspension pickup point for the left trailing arm. A quick Google Image search for "914-6 vin" returned this one, among others: ![]() A missing or obscured VIN is definitely grounds for suspicion. At the very least, it shows that some damage to the car was done in that area. Check all around for signs of repair. If you can find the VIN, do a Google search for it to see if anything turns up. Also look over on the 914world website; there is a list of known VINs entered there. --DD

It does. The VIN decodes as:
914 = 914-6 0 = 1970 model year 43 = Porsche Werk Stuttgart 2xxx = series number It looks like this one would be fairly late in the 1970 model year run; it looks as if the last one in the 70 M.Y. was 2668, according to this website. --DD

Be careful that the metal tag riveted onto the passenger side (above) is not the only tag you find to determine if the car is a Six. Obviously those can be removed and reinstalled with rivets. You should be able to locate the VIN stamped into the top of the passenger fender well inside the trunk, the VIN plate on the driver's side windshield post, the motor mount, the oil line bracket below the oil tank location, the ignition with on the left of the steering column, 5 lug hubs, etc.
