Trying another 2270 combo
Well, since my girlfriend did me a huge favor by destroying the engine in the 914(dropped a valve and it shot out the top of the case) I have decided to put the Powerstroke Turbo project on the back burner and slap something in the 914 for driving school in February...
The tranny was already hurting as well, so I'm gonna ship it out to Rancho for a few mods and some new bearings, the perfect time for it. I have decided on a "D" version 2270 but I'm gonna try it with stock cooling first. I have only attempted this once before, and the temps were borderline, this time I'm gonna try a set of Shads birals to see if they will allow an almost 10:1 CR with the stock shroud. If they do don't (looks like they will) I have a brand new FAT shroud to install on it just incase. I plan on keeping the same basic configuration as a normal "D" engine, but I'm using the Keith Black pistons basically to test their strength in a track/street car with almost 10:1 in a set of birals. I also plan to use another new cam that I dreamed up that has a bit less lift and a couple of degrees more duration than would be the norm, it is still split duration by 12 total degrees.. For heads I'm doing up another set of 2.0 914 heads, and keeping the same valve margins as a normal "D" version... I'm rippin the old engine and gearbox out tonite and stripping it down, I hope to be done with it in a month so I can get some drive time on it, but with my workoad thats probably wishful thinking, I can only work on my own junk after 2am. I'll keep you updated, looking for a solid 170 Ponies making power from 3-7500...that should not be a problem, we'll see how it cools. ------------------ Jake Raby Raby's Aircooled Technology www.aircooledtechnology.com

Sounds sweet...
I was wondering if you'd try something new when the engine let go. Not to sound evil or anything but when I heard the 914 engine blew...I just couldn't wait to see what you had planned for it. I'm sure you'll keep us posted on the power/testing of this. 10:1 on a street engine 2270, sounds like a winner to me. not to mention some real-life testing of the new biral babies. good luck!

I was glad when she blew it actually....I was itching to do something.
we'll see just how good this combo works, this is always the way I find my combos, is with my own cars.... Engine analyzer loves the configuration.....we'll see how it does.

Jake,
Why did the old engine drop a valve? Was it a stock configuration. Was it an engine you previously built? Was it an exhaust or intake. With the later...sodium or stainless. Was the seat at fault? We would be interested in your findings once it is apart. Also, was she racing you in the bug at the time ![]() I am curious, as I just sent my 2.0l heads off to RIMCO for new seats...East to West coast shipping was 45 busks! oneway!

I was curious which valve dropped and where it broke? We had tremendous problems breaking valve in the #2 cylinder on my race engine, even though we had dual springs (320# nose pressure) with titanium retainers, stainless valves and type 1 lifters. We also had but have since changed, 1.48:1 rockers and heavy(54gm) push rods. We think the push rods were making the valves float, even at 6000 RPM and now have some crmo 16gm rods and went back to a stock ratio rocker. So far in the races since, no valve breakage?

that explains alot...bullet proof if you are not trying to kill it!
Who wants a six again? ![]() Now think how hard a vw bus is on that engine! No further explination is requested Jake... I would be interested to see how the case main saddles had worn since it was a Virgin....

John, thats alot of spring tension, we have had great results to 8K with a measley 180 pounds on the nose @.500 and only 80- pounds closed with lightweight parts, including lifters and pushrods and lightened rockers..
The valve dropped on #2 exhaust. The engine had NEVER had the heads off, over 160K atleast and had been given 100% pure hell by me before she ever started driving it..... Valve train is where its at, less spring tesnion, better parts and nothing is ever too light...shoot me an email and I'll send you some pics of some of my valve train pieces.
