Windshield Replacemeant (Primer?)

I'm replacing the windshield in a '75 and have the new glass, sealer rope from 3M and have now read in one article that you put a pinch-weld primer on first. Is this necessary or an added step? I don't see anything on PP about it. Thanks!

Where did you get the windshield? Are you replacing the shiny trim or going with the blacked out one the guy at 914world has?

You might want to poke around over there too.

Glass came from Partsheaven out here in northern CA. I'm going with original chrome trim.

I'm sure it couldn't hurt to use the primer, but I didn't when I re-did my back window a dozen years back or so...

Seems to me there is a seal that you can only get at with the windshield out. Bruce(GWN7) on this site makes them, as I recall, and they are otherwise NLA.

I'd paint the windshield area if it was bare or showing signs of rust, if the paint looks fine and no signs of rust, I would not paint it. avoid any old primer as many are not very water proof. use a two part epoxy based primer such as DP primer, it is very water proof. a top coat would not be an bad idea also. all traces of rust should be removed. this may require wire wheel clean up for minor cases, and in bad cases require blasting prior to primer

Are you talking about the windshield to dash seal? Here's one at 914Rubber.

I think someone said you can do it with windshield in place, but it would have to be a LOT more difficult!

The several times I had to replace the windshield on my 914 vintage race car and it seemed to be needed every 3 or so years due to stone and sand damage, I had Safelite do the actual glass install. I first had them remove the old glass and they have a cleaner that removed the old adhesive better than I could do. The I used a wire wheel and cleaned the channel to bare metal and then used a zinc brush on primer, usually two coats and then a spray coat of body color. A few days later the Safelite person came back and put the glass in and used the rubber cover piece that some referred to as the dodge van rubber.
