911/914 exhaust question.
Assuming a plan to install a 3.0 or 3.2 engine in a '73-'75 914 with it's transmission, can the 911 exhaust heat exchangers be used assuming a firewall engine mount and a custom rest of exhaust system, perhaps with modifications to the clutch cable routing?

I do not believe that they will fit. I haven't tried it myself, but I believe that they will foul the inboard suspension mounting points.
You're going to need to get a set of headers. If you need any semblance of heat, you'll have to go with stock Six heat exchangers and pay through the nose. Or come up with some solution of your own. The B&B stainless 914-6 exchangers look like a really excellent idea, but they fit really poorly. You can make them actually fit and be useable if you put a lot of time into them, but even then they don't actually fit correctly. They have been contacted several times about this issue, and they don't seem to care. --DD

Thanks Dave, Perhaps they can be modified to fit. Will see if others have comments.

With new NOS Six heat exchangers being made by Stoddard, prices on used original Six heat exchangers might come down.
I considered the new ones but mine were good enough that after some minor repairs we are blasting them and having them ceramic coated -good to go. I would not consider the B&B header/heat exchanger due to the extremely poor reviews they have received from those who have installed them. For the price, they should bolt up perfectly AND provide great heat. They apparently do neither.

x2.. I don't think they fit. Another issue is that they become a restrictive element for a larger motor. You're talking about a 50%+ larger engine that needs to flow more exhaust.

x2 X2 - tried it a few yrs ago - yes the flanges will line up - but the 911 design does not fit inside the 914 engine space
you can, of course, spend a whole lot of money and time making a set of 911's sort-of-fit if that is your primary objective p.s. - I have a set of triad 914-6 1-5/8 ceramic-coated headers FS - paid $750 for 'em & will sell for same - gave up on project & don't need 'em ![]()
