The starter on my 3.2 is turning very slow. New battery. Whats going on? Is there trouble with engine ground?

Did you use the 914 starter ??

They will only last about 1 year turning over a 3.2.

SR17x and SR68X

One is much smaller than the other.

work done recently

Yeah, I'm the fellow that had major wiring harness problems hooking up my '70 chassis harness to my'88 3.2 engine harness. Kept on frying the intermediate harness that connected the two. That has been rectified.

How is the voltage output from the alternator ?? Could you have fried the alt. during this fiasco ?

1st. Check ground strap on tranny.

More details of the wiring between the 914 relay board and the 911 harness was done.

I could dig up my old notes of how to connect 914 wires to Carrera engine wires.

Electric gremlin luck

Haven't checked the alternator yet. But with my great electrical luck it is probably fried. I am just trying to get to the next step of turning over the engine. I added a battery charger to help it crank over but that did not help. I am going to try and go negitive like "topic 2" above and see how that goes.

wiring 3.2

Jim, I'll look at my notes tomorrow and get back to you on how I wired up the beast. I am using the motronic unit over carbs though.

Yep. Ground strap to the tranny and ground strap to the body. I even cheat some times and run one from the battery strait to the block.

Take one jumper cable and connect it from the mounting bolt on the starter to a good chassis ground and check it again. Make sure you don't ground abainst the positive lead :-)

If the starter turns over a little better then the ground is your problem. Also, check your battery connections to make sure you are getting good contact. Use a volt meter from the post to the cable clamp and have someone crank it over. If you see a difference, there's your problem. You should see very little if any voltage drop from the post to the cable clamp.
