Axle lenghts

I a building a 550 replica with 914-4 running gear including engine, gearbox and suspension
The problem I am trying to sort right now is the angle and length of the axles
Please have a look at the picture, does the angle look too sharp? I can't move the engine/gearbox any ,ore forward because its already hitting the firewall. I guess if the angle is still sharp, I might have to cut the firewall and form a bulge which is not a big deal

My bigger issue is the length of the axles, they seem too long. If I bolt one axle on, it pushes the gearbox about 60mm off center

Is there two different axle lengths depending on the gearbox?

Thanks for the advice
Rafik

Not sure about the angle, but it does look uncomfortably large. You'll want to check through the whole range of motion as well.

There is only one length of 914 axle. I believe the 911 axles are shorter, so you may want to look into those.

My next question is what is the axle length of a 914 and a 911?

looks like your 550 was designed for swing axles

suggest you ask questions on The Samba and see what the VW guys have for solutions - they do a lot of swaps & conversions

also read these - several of your issues are addressed in them
