How Many 6's are left?
Anyone have any info on how many surviving factory 6's are still around? I was having a "discussion" with another Porschophile. His thought was under 300. I thought this a bit low.
Opinions? James

I have no info of value to contribute. (hey, at least I identify this up front! lol)
Do you mean in the US or World Wide? You could consider sub-categories -- stock or modified, for example. Have you contacted the 914/6 registry? (I can dig up their contact info if you need it) They at least have a database of VIN's they've seen in the print/electronic media over that last few years... But I think you're right. 300 seems low to me, but I have no reason for saying that. When I was shopping for mine, I saw a total of 6 or 8 for sale that year. Hmmm.... krk. |

I know where 10 of them are located...
I bet there are less than 300. This should be a good thread. B |

Figure they built 3400 total 914's with 6's in them.
Not all of them came to the USA. For a business plan.. I used half of them as wrecked and half of that rusted out beyond repair. I would like to hope there is more.. B |

Someone will dig up the real #'s.
Most were built in 70. ~1700 imported into the US. (not that we're US centric...) Something over 300 were 71. 240 or so were 72. (Unclear if any were actually brought to the US by Porsche.. most seem to say "none") So if we have one, we should "hold"? (LOL) krk. |

There is atleast 10 in the Seattle area that I know of. Probably atleast another 10 I don't know of or have just seen or heard about. These vary from resto's to racecars to rustbuckets that still run.
Eric Fry's is a racecar that needs to be resto'ed..... Fordahl's is sweet and the fastest thing in the NW....and F production SCCA champ again. In the 70's there were alot of them driving around here... Geoff

That is what I want to know.
There have been 70k Boxsters built worldwide over a 6 year period. I see 3-4 daily. Now.. the 914 built over the same numbers of years was almost 120k. There had to be 914's EVERYWHERE by 1976. Is this true ?? I was 6 years old in 1976. I dont recall much..LOL B |

In Seattle they were really common! I remember the 6's as we knew they were real Porsches and would notice if one of them drove by.
But they did cost some good money, heck a 76 was over $7k new. I know I test drove one twice but the little women thought it wasn't too practical, so we got a station wagen. ![]() I remember only the first one I ever drove/rode in- a 1970 white that a friends gf got for her HS graduation plus that women I knew that had a green LE. ugly car that it was. Dudes/Dudettes,
I'm guessing, but I think RedBeard was talking about how many are left. When you are out there cruising today, how many do you see? (I drove mine down from Vancouver to San Jose... got some serious thumbs up action through Seattle and norther Oregon ![]() krk. |

See! In Seattle!!! It was raining again so all the sixes are put away for the winter. I drove my 914 to the Lowes and haven't seen another 914 in a few days.

On the 914 O.A. trip in 2000, Dennis Deeds "Tour 2000", we had about 30 cars at the peak of the event and I'd say a 1/3 to half where "real" 914-6's. Of course we got a lot of them here in So. Cal.

I have a friend who has an absolutely beautiful one sitting in his basement under a car cover. He is the original owner and it only needs the engine put together to be fully functional. He pretty much stays away from computers so I doubt it has ever been listed in the 914/6 registry.

RedBeard,
If you are looking for info on your 6 go to the 914 SIG Link page and send Larry Lee an email (he only has info on 6's). Here is an excerpt from an email I got from Larry: >My database currently has 2385 entries with 770 unique serial numbers. >There were about 3360 of these cars produced with about 1700 of them >being officially imported into North America. > >The information in my database comes from several sources, these include: >Every issue of Panorama from 1970 to date, >Every issue of Excellence from April 1987 to date, >Every issue of Road & Track from 1970 to date, >Some issues of Hemmings from 1998 to date, >Defunct publications like Porsche Trends Gallery >And other random publications like AutoWeek. > >Various web sites from about 1996 to date. The web sites include among >others: >Road Glue http://www.roadglue.com/ >914/6 Registry http://www.stazak.com/914reg/ >914 club http://www.dgi.net/914/ >The Rennlist http://www.rennlist.org/ >Automobile Atlanta http://www.***********.com >914 Owners Association http://home.earthlink.net/~deeds/ >Ebay >And random other web sites like PCA region web sites and personal web >sites. > >Also personal observations of 914/6s at various East Coast and Midwest >events. So he has 770 entries, but there is no telling how many of them are still around since some of his information is 30 years old. I have lived in NoVA for 5 years now and never seen another 6, and only a handful of 4's. From talking with the guys in the PCA I know there are at least two others in the group who attend PCA events on occasion, but we have yet to show up at the same events. Justin

At the last PCA event I went to, there was one other Factory 6. And his was not one of the 1700 offcially imported vehicles.
I know of about 10 Factory 6's in San Diego and figure that LA probably more and SF maybe about the same. I could get a P.D. like Mike Z to run the 914/6 registrations from all 50 states, but that could cost me a few dollars and still leave some off the list.... It's more of a curiosity than anything else. A case of the "How rare is it"...really. James
