I have a 1979 L82 Vette. I bought it new as a 2nd Lt. back in 1979, 24 years ago. The airflow research aluminum heads are at a friends getting ported and polished. When he is done, I'll bolt the heads on. My goal is to have it running this summer to help celebrate Corvette's 50th aniversary. My 914 only has a fresh 2.0 that Wayne Dempsey and I built a couple of summers ago. I have 914-6 engine tin, oil tank, and motor mount. So if I ever find a nice 3.0, and 914-6 heat exchangers, I'll do a conversion. If I put a V8 in it, I have some Porsche purist friends, that already give me hard time about my Vette, that would kick my @ss, and dump me as a friend. I also want to put Boxter S wheels on my 914.

Bee Jay,

'79 L82? Cool! I have a '77 L48 that I've been doing a complete mechanical rebuild on over the past few years. I hope to have it ready for Corvettes at Carlisle this summer. It shouldn't be too hard once the winter weather breaks (it's way too cold to work out there right now!). I bought a motor from a local engine builder. Iron Vortec heads, Comp Cams 268XE cam, sticking with the Quadrajet carb (love those huge secondaries!). I have the original motor sitting on a dolly in my garage and I toyed with the idea of putting it in a 914... until the blue 911 became available and I latched onto that instead.

To keep this thread related to the original topic... my favorite 914 tracks in NFS5 are Corsica and Schwarzwald. I haven't mastered Auvergne yet. I especially like the multiple paths that you can take on the various tracks in this game. BTW, I've seen copies of this game at a local Sam's Club for $8.

My Corvette Quadrajet was modified by Brad Urban, who makes the primaries slightly larger, and some other mods. I run a bigger cam, 470 lift 234 degrees of duration, 1.6 ratio roller rockers, balanced and blueprinted original block, airflow research aluminum heads with 195cc intake ports, and a modified LT1 intake, anti reversion headers, 2.5 inch pipes and turbo muflers. It is wicked fast in a straight line. I put 1.25 front sway bar, greenwood/eckler rear bar. After I put the engine back together I have bilstiens and a fiberglass rear spring to install and make it corner better. I already have 86 Vette wheels and tires on, and it has a 700r4 4 speed auto with high stall converter from a turbo regal. Porshe content....when I finish getting the Vette rolling and running right, I am going to do a six conversion on my 2.0 914. I already have the motor mount, the engine tin, and the oil tank. All I need is heat exchangers and of course a 3.0 engine.

OK, stress is starting to set in. I installed my new MB with an Athlon 1100 cpu, everything is configured right, works fine. My video card is an ATI 128 rage AGP.
NFSPU still will not load. I tried all the tricks, renaming gimme.dll, changing my paging file size, compatibility mode, updating drivers, nothing works. I have at least 10 hours into tring to get the dumb game to work. I even upgraded to DirectX9.0. I used DXDIAG and my directx is working fine.
I'm ready to try a better video card and see if that helps.
Anyone have a suggestion as to what video card I should get? What works for you?
I'm tired of spending money just to get this game to work but now it's personal, I'm on a mission.

BTW, I was also tring to get jheretic to work but it said my openGL was not configured. Any clues?

I cant get any of the NFS series to run on my computer, my older computer did fine, I think windows XP dosn't like any games meant to run on old versions of direct x, I think I read something about direct x 8 not being backwards compatable.

NFS: PU works just fine on my computer.

Win XP Pro
P-III (Mobile) 850MHz
ATI Rage Mobility 128
256 MB PC-100 RAM
32GB 5400RPM HDD
DirectX 8.1

The only games that have not run properly on XP are DOS games, and even then, most DOS games are OK.

I would suggest getting the most recent video card driver for your system, as well as the newest motherboard drivers. The video drivers helped me run a couple of old games that had been iffy before.

Aaron

EDIT: My video card is the same chip as Sammyg2's, just the mobile version. I would STRONGLY recommend that he get the latest Windows XP driver from ATI. The generic driver that Windows installs for the Rage128 Pro does not support OpenGL, the latest driver from AIT, however, does support OpenGL.

As it's been said, outdated drivers are the first thing to check. Windows XP also has what's called an Application Compatibility Wizard, you might want to check that out.

I know in Windows 2000 the NFS:PU demo just takes up all my virtual memory, then hangs. But XP should work better.

sammyg2 02-24-2003 07:42 AM

I'm beat, I just gave up. I installed the latest video drivers from ATI, the latest MB drivers from VIA, reconfigured everything there is to configure and still nothing.

The only idea I have left is install an old maxim 750 mb hard drive as a slave and set it up with win 98 so I can switch back and forth.
My regular HD is only a 4 gig so it's too small to partition. I may try it next weekend but I'm burned out on the whole hting for now.

Anybody have both Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed and Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2? I was wondering if anyone else had the same experiences that I have had. I am finding the cars in the new game (NFS:HP2) to be more "squirrely"... they don't like to hold a straight line as well as they do in NFS:PU. (And I like to drive the '73 Carrera RS in NFS:PU... that's about as squirrely as they come!)

I'm using an old Thrustmaster Nascar Pro wheel with USB-Nest adapter... it shows up as a 4 axis 4 button joysick. I've added stanzas to the defaults.ini and definitions.ini files for NFS:HP2, and that improved the feel of the steering a bit, but a little bit of steering input goes much further in the new game than it does in the older one.

I like the eye candy in the new game... the colors of the cars are nicely done, and the scenery is gorgeous (check out the sunset on one of the tracks!), but being able to set up the car exactly the way you want it, the way that NFS:PU allows you to do, still sets it apart. And if I have to buy a new wheel to enjoy NFS:HP2, I may be playing NFS:PU for some time to come.

I love that car. Rather easy to tune out the "squirrely-ness" though I keep it a bit tail-happy.

I love it too... although I find I'm much more competitive with a 930 in those "golden club" races.

Andyrew 05-27-2003 03:29 PM

I love driving the 73 Carrera RS, fully modifyed and properly tuned I whip my dad while he's driving anything else (although I do that anyways, hehehehe) My favorate is driving the GT1 in cockpit vision. Relying only on memory to see (or so it seems), man I love this game.

Zymurgist, I have found NFS: PU to the be most realistic track driving game. Although they kinda favor the 911, and they absolutely hate the 944 turbo (the car fully modified is as fast as a normal stock one, THEY HAVE THE REV LIMITER IN FIFTH GEAR, AAAAAHHHH). Some games come close, but the driving realism is excellent quality. The game could incorperate some more modifying to the cars, especially the early ones. Like in Motor City Online, you build your car from the ground up, from what size carbs (about 100 coices for that) to what kind of suspensin, coil over, springs, leafs, and the pound ratio. That was a learning game, that really taught me about the physics and stuff about cars, everything came into play, everything. But they stoped the game (KILL EA, KILLLLL EA!)

shorty10 01-23-2004 12:55 AM

to all that play i have a force feed back steering wheel, peddles with clutch, and a functional shifter... oh yeah now i can really shift into 2 on a tight corner
all at www.act-labs.com its really worth it

Now the new F1 game I got works perfect even with the steering wheel and pedals. Too bad I can't get a 914 for that game
I use to have the same problem with it freezing up mid-race. Found out it was my Video card. I cannot remember what I swithced too, but i can look. But I have mine on Windows 98 (did have on 2000 too). Im not sure how it works (or doesnt) with XP.
Just FYI.

(p.s. my times suck and I will not list them here. :p)

Yes, NFS2 does seem a bit more squirler. I have to correct my overcorrects alot more fequently. Seems like the ass-ends slide around a bit more. The steering range is definatly more touchy then on NFS.

hargray2 01-23-2004 10:11 PM

On NFS: PU go to create player--don't select a driver picture, just type
in Gulliver and click done. You should hear a slot machine payout sound
if you do it correctly. Then select your regular player and start playing.
This turns the cars into rc cars and they actually handle better.

Hey fella's don't know if you'd be interested, but we had some online racing tonight from some of the 911 guys

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=146878&perpage=40&pagen umber=1

I think we are going to do it again tomorrow, but you'll probably need to drive a 911 unless you have a 914-6. Man I really wish they had that in this game!

Just thought I'd let you know.

SGB 02-04-2004 09:21 AM

How was the race?

Dang-
I wanna try PU online now that I have cable modem and a hot PC. Maybe you could set up a schedule showing when the races will take place (more than a day in advance this time). I'll have to reinstall the game and wheel. I've never tried to online game, butr I'm sure my kids can show me. Heck, my 11 year olds favorite car is the 930. He loves to tap for oversteer and throtle through curves (while I hit the guard rail at half his speed). I'm looking for SCGT next time the kids get to EB games...
