part identification

I found these in a box of old parts. Thought they might be from a 70 - 73 914 but the dont fit my 74. They have VW markings so they could be from a bug. Anyone have an idea what year?

Porsche Crest I'm guessing VW

The telltale 'ribs' look like the ones in my '70 bus I had once upon a time. Could have also been used also in 411s and bugs I believe.

They are the inside door handles for 70'-72' 914's. 73' and newer were changed to black plastic. They were a VW part that was used until the change in 73'

Look at the part number it should say 411 000 000 which is the early 70-72 inside door handle covers. These also fit the 914/6 cars and good ones should find a home.

Porsche Crest I should be more clear

I think the handle surrounds for our cars are rather longer ellipse shapes versus the more squared off shape of those surrounds in the picture. By the "ribbed area" I meant to say that on our cars it is a bigger "ribbed area." I think that the surrounds on the picture came off a bug or bus where the door lock is a button coming out of the top of the door panel, not a flap-type affair like on the 914. With only the door latch, the surrounds weren't quite as big.

If you have a copy, look on page 77 of "914 and 914-6 - A Restorers Guide to Authenticity" by Dr. Bob Johnson. I shows what I mentioned earlier, and indicates that the long "pull handle" was made thicker starting in 1973, when the surround was changed to black plastic and made larger to accomodate the bigger handle. All surrounds for all years, chrome and plastic are ribbed. Sorry, I don't have a scanner.

Yes. The ones pictured will only fit 70'-72' 914's and certain VW models. The entire inner door handle assembly and surround was made bigger starting in 73'. The ones you have actually were from the VW parts bins and used until the change in 73'. Only the black plastic ones will fit your car.
