What Tach??
Guys, I just got my 2316cc "annihilator" capable of some heavy duty driving in the 914. I had some issues with the suspension and brakes and just got it dialed in.
I have a problem, the engine revs so lightning fast that the tach cannot keep up with it, and I wonder about teh factory tachs ability to be accurate at higher revs. My engine makes power to 7500RPM and I shift at 6500 most of the time driving hard. I was thinking of an autometer tach, but don't know what size will fit in the stock location. what have you guys tried?? All I can say about the engine is that it is too much for the car, the suspension is my weak point and thats my next area of interest. I have little experience in that area so I will be seeking some advice. This 180HP and 188 lb/ft of torque is enough to break loose in third gear just rolling on the throttle. ITS A TRUE ANNIHILATOR! for 3500-7,000 RPM hold on to your hat!!

One of the Autometer tachs is a direct swap for the stocker. I forget which one, but it should be easy to tell. It's just the size.

hmmn, anyone have one of these in their car? I need 10K rpm instead of 8.
I just got back from a ride in my beast. I swear I think its faster than my 220HP drag beetle!

Cool, I wonder what that part# is?? I looked through Summit and could not find one close to that size......The stock tach is a pure joke on this beast..

Do you have any acceleration numbers for your car? I'm very curious to know them. Thanks, Alfred |

Hey, thanks for the picture of my dash. The tach is a standard AutoMeter with memory recall. Looks huge, but the large meter section is only about 1/2 inch thick and the next small section fits right in the hole with the rubber sleeve. I really like the recall feature. Good luck.

Jake, North Hollywood Speedo had/has a new vdo that is much better at keeping up with the faster/higher reving motors that we are building today. A friend of mine in Dallas bought one from them to put in his 2.4L car and it matched the car's OE guages and worked really well. I can mail him and get the part number if ya want it...peter

The outer dia of the tach is a little larger than the outer diameter of the stock tach. The main part of the body is smaller in diameter and just fit in the opening with the rubber ring just like a stock tach. If you want to call me this evening (6:00PM or so CA time) I can go through the receipts for the race car and find the model number as I ordered it from Summit Racing, 619-691-8640.
Just had a thought, it doesn't show in the picture but I have a shift light on top of the dash and set it a couple hundred RPM below the redline since I found I rarely watch the tach unless I am just crusin on a straight or something. Bought it from Summit also. Last edited by John Rogers; 02-26-2003 at 06:02 AM.. |
