1983 944 Must have upgrades?
944 Owners:
9 Magazine has just purchased a 1983 Porsche 944 for use in our DIY articles, and projects. What "must have" upgrades would you suggest we do? Brian Minson 9 The DIY Porsche Magazine http://www.9magazine.com bminson@9magazine.com PS: If you haven't seen the new issue yet, take a look! We have made some major changes you are sure to enjoy in the only DIY Porsche magazine. |

Change the timing and counter balance belts using the factory tool then cross check them with the several after market belt tension tools. Develop a tool using rulers and a digital fish scale that's as accurate as the stock tool. Or possibly more accurate.
Develop a test procedure for non-start/poor running conditions that most any one can follow and use basic test instruments such as a 12 VDC test light, volt/ohm meter, resistor dampened diode, other. Dyno test various after market air filters and modified stock air boxes to settle for once and for all that these modifications are totally worthless. Figure out where all of the water leaks come from.

almost any "upgrade" that makes the car sound louder is sure to appeal to some. maybe you could drill the muffler, then write that it flows better than stock.

Remove and replace the cooling system: radiator, water pump (upgrade), the f%@&!#g thermostat, thermo time switch, oil-to-coolant heat exchanger.
R & R the clutch. This has been done but there are never enough text and PICTURES for this long process. Upgrade to the Fiberwerks front and rear valances. Especially the front because the OEM front is often damaged. Replace the OEM AC compressor with an R134 compressor (Sanden). R/R the rear hatch glass. Again, it's been done but more pictures and techniques would be nice to have considering there is no factory assistance for this one. Here is an idea for a general Porsche article: How To Read An Electrical Diagram. Most electrical faults can be diagnosed to a few components if you knew how to run the wiring on paper. As you see from this BBS, the 944 crowd is every bit as energetic as the 911 guys. Especially considering the 944 line ran for only 12 years vs the 911's 38 years of production. If you want to sell a bunch more magazines, cater to the water-pumpers also.

I think a good idea would be to have a 'how to' section based around common 944 problems: worn CVs and subsequent replacement, timing belt tensioning and replacement, clutch replacement, etc.

Upgrade to the later aluminum suspension components and an all around suspension upgrade........after all.......that is what these cars are best suited for........make it a "canyon carver"

How about an article on converting those awful old bullet fuses to modern fuseboxes?
Also an article on upgrading the old dash to a newer version. Also how about a dash restoration project step by step? There HAS to be a way to gauge out those cracks and refill with some plastic goop. Also how about securing a distribution deal with Borders so we in the UK can read your mag?

A must have upgrade, on a 20 year old car?
The sound system! Replace all the speakers, wiring maybe, and head unit. The headlights! Possibly to HIDs? IceShark on Rennlist has some god like upgrade for the headlights-not HID. The suspension? How to get the best ride possible by switching out the shocks to KONIs or Bilsteins. I think thats all I got. Drained dry for ideas, I'm gonna go play with my car! Lynn ![]() |

YEAH! Do what Kingspot1 mentioned.
Do the Iceshark headlight upgrade!!! If you don't know what that is do a search here or on Rennlist. Or you can email me and I'll clue you in. This IS the "must have upgrades" for the 944!!! PLEASE do it! |

While you are at it, get someone to help with proof-reading your mag. The last issue I bought had a lot of spelling and grammar errors. Not trying to be mean, but if someone shells out the cash for a magazine, they expect those little things to be spot-on. Otherwise, great job and I hope to see more good things!

You must not have seen one of the new issues! If your local Barnes & Noble, Booksamillion, Hastings, or favorite bookstore is sold out, I think the Pelican Newsstand still has a few copies left.
Each issue has an individual section for 911/912, 914, 924/944/968, 928, and Boxster/996. Inside each section you'll find Q&A's, Tech Tips, and step by step DIY projects just for your type of Porsche model. You will like the changes we have made at 9 Magazine. The first DIY articles using our 944 will start with our April/May issue. Brian Minson 9 Magazine http://www.9magazine.com http://www.benzmag.com |

Alex,
We surely do have 9 Magazine in Canada. Our distributor is IPD (same company for Barnes & Noble). I don't have a list of store names, but I would assume the major chain stores will have us. Brian Minson Publisher 9, The DIY Porsche Magazine http://www.9magazine.com |

It just dawned on me! HELLO!
The 968 Door Handles. That would really look "Fly" on a certain gunmetal grey 83' 944. And improving the shifter. Mine feels like an "Ol' Sloppy Pig". To, maybe, a short shift kit. How about a updated steering wheel? Personally, I would REALLY like to see an article about maintaining/upgrading the safety features of the car. Lynn |

* How about some nicer looking side mirrors instead of having those squared ones.
* An antenna upgrade to that of the later 944's. * A transmission rebuild and/or replacement covering the removal of the tranny itself. * Suspension upgrades a must ![]() -Gus |
