Question Price to get syncros installed

Well I know the time is drawing ever closer to replace the syncros in the transmission... between 1st and 2nd it just dosn't sound good... :-( especially when its cold. So I thouth I'd ask you how much I could expect to pay for a job like this.

Re: Price to get syncros installed

I'd like to know as well, mine's getting kinda messy in there as well (1st & 2nd). I'm gonna try just changing out the tranny lube first, I've heard that can "fix" a lot of problems (plus it's just good preventative maitinence).

Scootin', you could also try what the truckers do and shift without using the clutch. Of course, it's not very forgiving of mistakes.

On a more serious note, try double clutching. It's not too hard to learn and it will really smooth things out.

Synchros - looking close to $1000 to get them done. More if your synchro hubs (a.k.a dog teeth) are shot

Total tranny service, around $2000

Double clutching soleves and prevents alot of problems. My Willy's didn't have any Synchros.. so I either double clutched it or gave my tranny a beating.. if the synchros are going you can do it yourself.. taking out andre-installingthe trans will take longer than replacing the synchros..

Actually......

Small disagreement on that point.

to get at the synchros, a few pieces need to come off.

for those pieces to come off, you need a puller to get them off the shafts.

To get them back on the shaft, you need to heat them up to over 230 deg F.

Need to freeze the hub and heat the synchro to get it in, it is a tight press fit.

see attached image, you are looking for part 5, 19, 35, and 38.

Rev match, makes the shifts smoother and then you don't need the synchros.

How about getting a used gear box, wouldn't that be cheaper?

Exactly

Surprisingly, 911 gearboxes are much easier to work on than 944s are

Think about it, how much for a new or should I say used gear box? I would fork out the money nad have your tranny worked on because it will be an almost fresh tranny. I mean that is if you didnt do alot of grinding. Thats what I would do but then again whos car has been sitting in a driveway for how long?
