I can do it on the right road when it's a lil chilly out. I mean I barely just barely get a chirp, but it is there. It sounds kinda far out there and I never used to be able to do it, but for some reason I can do it every now and again all of a sudden. Has anybody else ever done it?

I hope your not doing that on purpose, you'll wear that new pinion gear out fast. Glad you got it driving. Are you still going to sell it?

I'm going to sell it, it's just a matter of when. I'm thinking that I will do all of my "experimenting" on this one, that way I don't screw up a 951. I'm going to do my custom intake, custom exhaust, and custom strut tower brace. Just so that I learn how to do it, and kinda because I"m curious about how much of a difference it will make. I'll probably put a rear sway bar on it too, just out of curiousity.

I used to do that kind of stuff when i got my 944 (chirpped easily in 3rd), but now I know better and would rather conserve my clutch/tranny

I can chirp in 4th.
When i went to High School Drags I chirped 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th right before i crossed the 1/4 mile mark. I have LSD too. I guess since i have a new clutch it can do this but like everyone says, its not good!! AT ALL! I dont ever do it unless its easy like raining or snowing. Glad to see your driving again. John |

If I really wanted to, I could chirp in 3rd, 4th, and 5th, haha. J/K. Yes, I've chirped in third before, back when I first got the car. I've wisened up considerably since then.

Stray!!! YOU ARE A RIOT!!! emisson problems... too funny.
Hey Gearhead - where are you in South Dakota - I went to Sturgis in '94 - that was unbelievable. In '68, in another fine, rear-engined, German automobile, I was able to do short burn outs - so one day I really wound it up, dropped the clutch, went about 5 feet and exploded the transmission. The same thing will eventually happen to the 944 transmission, and then you'll get the same feeling of regret that I got. Not a good idea.

NO NO, encourage them to tear up the tranny! Light the tires, patch em, power brake it. Do it!

gearhead, curious, didn't your old tranny have R+P issues? I'm sure you know and others have posted it but first hand I can tell you that tire chirp in an n/a translates into ring+pinion issues somewhere in the 944 dictionary.

Can you imaging how hard he would have to be driving that thing to get it to do that?
I mean dropping the clutch, high RPM's, sheer stupidity.

I really can't imagine it, especially if you're drag racing, if you're shifting from 3rd at high rpm(maybe around 6k) and up shifting to 4th and chirping the tires, ummm how??? 4th is higher geared than 3rd(and w/only 150hp), explain this one to me because I can't even imagine it.

Didn't think about that, I guess we will have to wait for him to get out of school to tell us how he did it.

I imagine he was trying pretty hard, and being pretty hard on the car at the same time, like you said, high revs and dumping the clutch, hmmm I wonder if they have the orig. rubber center clutch disc, if so, they're gone.
FYI: if you guys hear a clunk at the back of the car when you let the clutch out, your clutch needs to be replaced, the rubber center is destroyed and it only operating by the limp mode "catches" that prevent a total failure and leave you stranded. If you continue to drive it like that it will take out you gearbox too. |
