Help! Rattling noise when in neutral.

Hello Everyone,

I have a 1986 944. When i am in neutral, i hear a strange rattling noise.
BUT, when i push the clutch, down to the floor, it stops after 2 seconds.
AND, if i push the gear shift up towards 1,3&5 and hold it there against the gear, the noise stops.

CAN YOU HELP?

Hmmm... This could be a bunch of different things or a combination of things. I once had this rattling when idling in neutral and it turned out to be my tranny coming apart.

Other people have a similar problem and they say it is the throw out bearing.

Could even be something as simple as a loose heat sheild.

If you have a rubber centered clutch disc and it is old it may be rattling.

I know this doesn't help pinpoint your problem but at least it gives you a few ideas.

There was TSB out on that. It was found by Porsche that it was ? the intermediate shaft something or other?. Porsche's official stand was that wouldn't hurt anything, and they wouldn't recall the cars for it.
It probably wouldn't hurt to take the Pilot's advice and have it checked though. Reading something, and firsthand experience are two completely different things.

If I recall this right, according to the recall, this was the gears idling in the tranny, and it's supposed to stop as soon as the clutch is in, obviously it doesn't stop in your case... It could be a throw out bearing, or the torque tube going bad, these are not really common, but again, as Im6y said, it wouldn't hurt to have it checked out.
