Wheelskin shift boot replacement
I found out the 944 shift boots wear out and the factory replacement is unbelievably expensive. I have found a great replacement on the internet...Wheelskins replacement boots. The best price I found on the internet is: http:www.autotoystore.com.
There price is $44.95 plus $3.20 shipping. The leather is an excellent quality. They also have steering wheel covers to match in 11 colors. I got it in two days! Nice people too. Hope this helps someone. |

Performance Products sells the same product for $39.95. I installed it in my 84 944 and it looks great.

I did too, but couldn't get the plastic cap (with the shift gear diagram) back onto the top of the boot. It's only a cosmetic piece but it completes the shifter looks. It seems the leather is too thick for the plastic cap to pit back into position.
Did your cap fit back on okay? If so, what's the secret? --Mike |

There's no "trick" to putting the cap back on. You just toy around with it, and make sure you get as little leather as possible under it, but make sure it looks good.
Usually the replacements are much thicker than stock, which makes it a bit harder, however I've done this on my car, AND a friends car before, take your time, it's really not that hard. Ahmet ------------------ It's all the driver... |

I used a plastic cap from a 2L soda bottle. It fit perfectly (tight, not too tight) and i could push it all the way in and still have enought sticking out to grab hold of.
I only used the cap to "train" the leather into the shape I wanted it to be. I also put it in there to hold some adhesive to the leather to the shifter. I took it out and snapped the real cap back in to finish the job. Good luck ------------------ Gielamonster My 944 Page [This message has been edited by Gielamonster (edited 06-26-2000).] |

I've done the wheelskins shiftboot on two cars and I've been pleased both times, that cap is a pain though.
