944 engine code

Hello, I've searched this and many other sites trying to figure this out. I recently purchased a bare 944 block thinking I was buying a 88 2.5 NA block. The numbers on the block are confusing. It appears to be a M44.11 engine (89 2.7L) but has a bore of 100mm. I don't care about the displacement just trying to figure out if it came with a 8 valve or 16 valve head and does it make a difference what cylinder head I put on it ? thanks for any input/help.

That’s a strange looking engine number, it even looks like it’s been messed with. Here is one of mine from a 1987 Turbo for comparison.

Yup, your right. that's what should be there and I expected it to show up with a M44.09, 46J xxxxx code. I wonder if the "HB" are the initials of the person that may have altered it. I tried tracking the part # casted into the side 944.101.210.2R and under that 0046/B (probably casting #) but got no where with that too. The block/girdle is in excellent condition with very clean cylinder walls. I was told it was from a 88 944 NA so I was/am going to use it to build a extra 8 valve track motor but not sure what I'm starting with. Thanks for responding, maybe someone here has an answer, if not I'll figure it out as I go.

I wonder if it is a replacement block and hence does have all of the factory stampings.

One bolt hole or two on the front coolant passage?

One is the 104mm bore block:

Two for the 100mm
