Introduction

Hello,
I want to introduce myself to the 944 group. I am new to the Porsche family and the new owner of an 1986 944 NA that needs lots of love. I drove it home and as I was pulling into my garage the power steering rack decided to let loose. Fluid was puddling on my garage floor. Upon inspection I pulled the boots back and there was a lot of fluid released on each side. Seals bad?? I am assuming I need to rebuild the steering rack. Any thoughts or advice is welcome. And yes I would like to keep the budget under control. I have seen prices for refurbished racks from about $300 and up on ebay and $2,250 at Pelican. Rebuild kits around $70. Is it a DIY project??

Thanks in advance,
John

Welcome!!!

If you're handy and the rack doesn't have internal corrosion you can do it yourself - www.rennbay.com has rebuild kits for the rack as well as the pump, and do yourself a favor and replace the reservoir as they are cheap and contain the internal filter for the system.

Please add the details of your car to your signature in the User CP tab and you can avoid the repetition of listing your car in the future.

I think you'll find the folks on here very helpful and unlike other P-car forums friendly and non-judgy.

Thanks Mike,
I appreciate the info. I'm too new to access the user CP options...I tried. I've been part of the Club Cobra forums for a long time and found that group to be a plethora of info when needed. I'll be pulling the rack out of the 944 and decide what to do then. Tempted to hit the "easier" button and purchase a re-fabed one.

Welcome John. This forum and Rennlist (and YouTube) will tell you pretty much anything you want to know. Be sure to use the Search function so you can benefit from advice others have already documented... this is important forum courtesy.

I am resealing the PS rack in my 87 924S as we speak, as a formality on a car which has been off the road for over a decade; I’ll also do the pump; I’ll only get know if I was successful when i eventually get the car up and running. Ii is NOT - for me - a fun task.

These cars ARE expensive to repair and make reliable again; you’ll here $5K minimum in parts to do a basic go-thru ... I thought that was nuts but I’ve learned it isn’t. Therefore, a running and somewhat maintained example for $3K or so can be a quicker way into ownership.

I’m documenting my car’s journey in a thread within this forum if you’re interested.

Nice to have you join the group. Over the years this forum has been a great support group for my projects and a tremendous resource of technical advice. YouTube has also been very helpful where techniques are involved. Good luck with your issues.

Some people try to turn back their "odometers." Not me. I want people to know 'why' I look this way. I've traveled a long way and some of the roads weren't paved.
