I have no clue... But Please Help
Ok.... Here we go. I have an '83 944 I just got a few weeks ago, and I was going on my first trip over 100 miles. As I was going along on the highway, I lost power... It seemed as though no gas was getting to the engine, because the engine was turning for a few seconds, but not enough tokeep on going. I couldn't jump it in those few seconds, and she wouldn't start back up again. After towing it to a nearby garage, it started up with no problem. My first theory was the fuel filter(I had just put in that Chevron-Techron Stuff after being advised to by some friends-and thought that it had loosened the junk in the filter out and clogging it). But after replacing the fuel filter, the car seems to have the same problem.
-After sitting for awhile, she starts up fine, but she stalls after awhile and won't start back up. Ok, is this long enough? Anybody advice is greately appreciated. Thanks -Chris |

Is there a way you can check fuel pressure? The end of the fuel rail has a threaded plug where a fuel pressure gage can be installed. I assume the engine has a fuel rail of some sort. You have to establish whether it is an ignition or fuel problem.

Try this:
Have a friend turn the ignition key to the first position (don't start the car) so that the power is on. Climb under the back of the car and listen for a "Hum". If there's no hum, your fuel pump may be dead or dying. It's pretty common on the early 944's to have dead pumps. That's the first easy step. If it's not that, you definately want to check to see if it's a fuel or spark problem as Lawrence advised. David www.RealRide.com/racing (Visit our Message Board for racers) |

Hey, thanks for the info. We did the check like you said, and there was no humm. There was a very slight vibration, but nothing that seemed to qualify. Thanks again!!
