Not driving anymore (HELP!)
Well, I just received a letter from DMV saying my licence was to be revoked for a year...
I'm wondering if I should get a lawyer, and try to argue that (I don't think I'll even go to court for a "hearing"?), or try to go to another state, and get a licence there? (My sis lives in Rhode Island, all I'd need would be proof of insurance, and a birth certificate, or is it???) I was putting my car on sale this monday in order to replace it with a 944 Turbo S, and passed on that Baja Bug idea some of you know about... Anyway, any ideas? Suggestions? What can I do, if anything? I cannot imagine not driving for a whole year, infact I'm sure I will be, legally, or not! A friend of mine drove for two years in an un registered, no-title car, and never got caught, but if I did get caught driving without a licence, would it be susp. for longer? I know it's one of the offenses with highest # of points, for insurance, when one gets caught without a licence though! Again, I'm up for anything, anybody have ANYthing to tell me at all? Funny you bring this up because we were just discussing this in Transportation and Logistics class(You actually do learn useful things in college). Thanks to the deregulation of 78' they had to crack down on people getting licenses from other states because truckers were doing this because anyone could be a trucker. They would carry 10 licenses on them. They would drive in pairs and if one got pulled over and they took his license, the other drove down the road, then they switched up because he had another 9 licenses. I'm pretty sure you would need proof of residency and that your a resident of that state. It will be pretty hard to do because they try to make it impossible to do what your wanting to do.
I too want to know what you did to get it revoked? |

When I was in college, a senior, I lost my license for 6 months in the state of VA. I had gotten 3 speeding tickets in two months. UVA was an all male school in those days - I'm dating myself here - and I had a girlfriend at Mary Baldwin, Madison, and Mary Washingston. I was visiting each, each weekend. Those, as I recollect, were the days that I thought would never end.....But they did with the revocation of my license and time. My parents promptly showed up and took the car. My father was a lawyer at one point in his life.
Let's see what can happen if you drive without a license. Suppose you get into an accident and injure someone. I am not a lawyer but I do not think your insurance would cover any liability. You could be sued for everything you have. If you have nothing, those injured might go after your parents as you are not on your own but are your parents' dependent and responsibility. They could be held accountable for your actions. Think of that before you continue driving. |

Boy can I relate. A whole group of my friends and myself were in the muscle car scene in Massachusetts at the time they passed their get tough law about too many speeding tickets. Long story short....One buddy lost his license for 3 years. Went to court for the hearing: "tough toenails kid, that Chevelle SS will last forever, now!". Another buddy was a bus driver, NEVER had a violation in a bus, they took his license for 3 years. He pleaded for leniency/second chance because of his profession: No dice, no mercy, find another job. I had the good fortune to get married and move to Connecticut at about this time. My driving record, thank God, was WIPED CLEAN! In the past ten years I've had no tickets and I've even gotten a CDL. I learned my lesson(sort of). Now I've got a car that won't peel your eyelids back but will corner like nobody's business! Lotsa luck....

Can't really say that I am not suprised. Sounds like all you can do is buy that 944 Turbo S and save all the money you would have spent on gas, tires, more tires, more tires, shocks, insurance, speeding tickets, etc... and put it towards some good public transportation. Sorry to hear about your troubles.
Good Luck, Chris |

Keep driving, but only on the race track! I guess you don't need a drivers license to do that.

Not to put more salt into an old wound but why are you so surprised about the suspension. It is simply the direct result of your OWN actions. No one MADE you drive in the way that got you in trouble, you did it with your own free will and now it's time to pay the price. Alternatives like getting a licence from another state or using an alternative name are just delaying what looks like a continuing problem. Even worse, the idea of driving without a licence is criminal.
So, you did the crime, now do the time. Quit crying like a baby and accept responsibility for your actions... You can still purchase the new car and the time off will allow you to create a really nice ride that you will be proud of when you return to the "Privilege" of driving. 1.2gees... your young, smart and an excellent contributor to this list... your' just a little too wild on public streets. Get your driving style in order and you will have a wonderful future. |

mideastmafia/hoff944:
My license is being revoked because I have gotten more than one reckless driving ticket in 12 months. The thing that bugs me is, at a court case in Virginia, they sentenced me to take driving improvement classes, in exchange of my reckless driving ticket being reduced to an "unsafe movement violation"... However a few days after I got back, my license was suspended by NC, because I exceeded the points I could go up to. Well, I couldn't attend the classes (ofcourse, without a license you can't go in!) and explained the situation to the judge in Virginia, however this time, instead of giving me more time, he just decided I should get the reckless driving charge... hoff944: I've heard it both ways, but I'm having some friends check to see if I can legally (or illegally) get a license there, AND get pulled over in NC, but not go to jail! Looks like it might work; Proof of residance, check (my sis. lives up there, shouldn't be a problem) Two forms of photo id, check And I can sign the title over to my mom's name for insurance here in NC, so that checks too, all that's left is confirmation. I'll find out more about it. I'll also get a motorcycle license in the mean time, just in case! Lawrence: Thanks for understanding, I do appriciate your advice, I'm not planning on doing anything stupid... Diesel: There's a good reason why we drive these 8v NAs, it's the brakes, and handling! cditch: Thanks for the comments, I shall buy my next car whenever I have exactly enough $$$, with the money I'm going to spend on puruing this, I just don't know when it'll happen... Public transportation is fine, but we all know it's really not sufficiently developed, at least where I live. Magnus_944: Believe it or not, you DO need a driver's license to drive on the track, or at an auto-x. +Driving TO the event is yet another problem... p0r2chby: Thank you for some of your comments, but I'm not sure I follow you with some of what you say, including "quit crying like a baby", and "no one made you drive in the way that got you in trouble", as well as others... I'm not very surprised it came to this, well except for the fact that a month ago, when I received my license back, I was told my record was wiped clean, since it was suspended anyway, and now they tell me they're taking it away for MORE than one reckless driving ticket in a year? I also do realize this is the punishment for what I've done, I just don't think it's fair, I'm not a very dangerous driver, just "agressive" and "fast". In the last 80,000+ miles I've driven (the way I always do), I've never gotten in an accident, save for "hugging" the curbs, and the like... I didn't even run over a frog! I'll add this: In the last 2 months or so, I haven't gotten a single ticket, and didn't even get pulled over in the 3 times I've passed through Virginia! OK, in conclusion, I asked for advice, thank you all for sharing what you think about my situation. I just got an appointment for an "appeal", to which I'm planning to attend with a lawyer, thanks again, Ahmet ------------------ It's all the driver... |

In the twelve years or so that I've been driving, I've yet to have even a fender-bender or a ticket, much less a serious accident, although Iv'e come close more times than I care to remember. If this sounds like boasting, it isn't. I've been extremely fortunate.
In my early 20's, I used to drive fast and 'aggressively' like 1.2gees. I was once pulled over for speeding, and at the time, was driving with an expired driver's license. The officer either didn't notice, or chose to cut me a huge break. I truly believe I have a gaurdian angel. In a few months, I'll be leaving my white collar job to emabark on a more luctrative career of driving a tractor-trailer. (Iv'e always loved big rigs). Anyway, my point is, this option may not have been available, if I had been ticketed or fined(like I so richly deserved to be) on any of a multitude of occasions. As any of you can attest, it's extremely difficult to resist the urge to speed or to wrap around a tight corner at speed when you drive a Porsche. Call it maturity or mellowing, but I would'nt be driving with this sense of responsibililty five years ago. |

Ahmet,
Sorry to hear the unfortunate news but you really should take this as a chance to regroup instead of trying to beat the system. I know we've had this discussion before but you really ought to slow down on the highways. As somebody else posted, you're a very intelligent person and very knowledgeable about cars. I can also relate to your position. When I was younger (early 20's), I was a maniac in my 911. It wasn't until I wrecked my car with my girlfriend in the passenger seat (my wife now) that I considered taking it to the track. I was lucky as I drove like a total idiot, way over my head and fortunately nobody was around, I could have killed them all. But at the time, I thought I was the greatest driver, totally cocky and nobody could tell me otherwise. I was convinced that there should be no speed limits and rules were meant to be broken. Anyway, I really want to see you go to the track after you get your license back. I know you've said you want to but maybe you really should now. You don't have to start racing, just do Driver's Ed to start with. For all it's worth, you might even be able to do it right now. Since you're not driving daily, you can save $$ on fuel. With that money, you can spend it on entry fees. How to get to the track? Have a buddy drive you there, he can be your pit crew, just pay for his lunch and gate fee. There are plenty to people who would die to get an opportunity like that. Maybe find a local shop that has a transporter with extra room. Might cost a few more $$ but it's well worth it. You'll also be better off getting more seat time in a na944 than building a 944 Turbo to terrorize the streets again. All of us are slow when we start track driving, it's better to be slow in a slow car than to be slow in a fast car! You'll have a better excuse when you bench race afterwards. Where do you live? I may know somebody in the area who races. Maybe I can have you contact them and go to the events with them. Unfortunately, PCA driving schools require a valid driver's license to participate.

Hey, Don't feel too bad. It happens to the best of us... I get mine back in January. I would check to see if you can't get a probationary license - that way you can go to school, work, and anywhere else you tell them that you are *required* to go. Or just use an alias and a fake birth certificate... (risky)

Ummmm I hate to change the subject too much, but how did how did you crash your 911 David? What year was it? Was it modded? You had a 911 in your early 20's? (Sorry but I love to hear Porsche stories.)

Hoff,
I had a 1987 Carrera with a built 3.6L Twinplug. How I crashed the car is not important, I'm not particularly proud of the fact that I endangered many people in public with my irresponsible driving back then. The point is that I was driving way over my head and was lucky that I didn't hurt anybody. I'm happy to share racing stories in my Porsche Race Car and at our website, we always write about the events. But there is nothing worth discussing when it involves street racing. Well... I'd advise against driving on a revoked license. A friend got his suspended for not meeting pollution requirements (in Illinois, it get suspended if you can't pass the test or get a exemption), as he was driving to work one day he got pulled over for a rolling stop at a stop sign. He was quite surprised when they put him in jail and his g/f had to bail him out. He came into work the next day complaining that they put him in jail like common criminals, and we replied... but at this point, you are...
In the end it cost him alot. If you have a accident or get pulled over without a license, or even if you get one from another state and they cross reference you (Illinois requires SS#'s too) and realize what your doing, you may find yourself in a cell for awhile. |

Yes I've found out,
First time: In jail until next court date, license suspension time increased by one full year... Second time: 60 days in jail, and license gone for life, anywhere in the United States... There are no ifs, no buts about this policy... Now, I think I found ONE thing, I can get an international license, and that would be totally legal... (Yes, I've checked) Depending on the hearing, that's what I might have to do (and that would be what I'd do if it's suspended for longer than a couple of months... international liscences are not valid in the country where issued...eg if you get an international liscense from germany you cant drive with them in germany...as i remember in order to get an int'l liscense you had to have a valid liscense in the country of issue..
if you were exceeding the speed limit and got reckless driving charges..that is too bad and i feel bad for you, however if you were driving DUI, DWI or doing wheelies in residential/school areas ....then i have no sympathy...do the time ------------------ mort 74 911s 84 944 |
