944 engine noise
My '86 944 has a rotational, metallic scraping noise in the front of the engine. I removed the front cover expecting to hear the noise from a belt pulley or tensioner. They were not noisey. The noise seems loudest near the crank pulley. Does this mean oil pump? Will I have to replace the oil pump or just a bushing/bearing in it? Any help would be appreciated.

I have 2 cars and have for 8 yrs and havn't heard a noise like tht. can u explain when u hear it, all the time or more about it as to the soumd. Take your a/c belt off and see if it's still there, then if so take the power steering belt off and then the altenator belt. Maybe it will be the bearing in one of those. Good place to start anyway, to rule those out.

Also make sure the harmonic balancer is not slipping. Chased a noise on my wife's Volvo a few weeks back. Rubber damper on harmonic was allowing pulleys to slip under load of alternator and power steering pump. Sounded more like a belt screeching than a metallic noise though. Just something else easier to check than the oil pump. Good luck.

My 86 944 (120K) makes a knocking sound from the timing belt cover area. This only occurs when the engine is first started and lasts until the engine warms up (approx. 45 secs.)then nice and quiet. The car is due in for it's next timing belt change in 5K miles. Is this something I should have looked at or wait till my belt change? Doesn't seem to affect the way the car starts/runs.
