Pop Up Headlights - From Nothing

Hi,

I have "inherited" a 968 race car (its a genuine Club Sport) which has no headlights.

Has anyone retrofitted pop up headlamps into what is essentially a blank canvas.

I am not concerned about using genuine Porsche parts as I have no intention of ever selling the car and just want to drive and enjoy it.


I would appreciate any thoughts or ideas on alternatives to the original 968 pop up system that may work.

When you say it has no headlights, does that mean it has an aftermarket front panel thats just solid or are the head "holes" covered allowing you to fit new headlights in their place if needed?

Your best option would be to get parts used and rebuild the system. Youll likely need the headlights/headlight buckets, the bar/mechanism that runs across the front of the car as well as the headlight motor. From there youd want to verify the old wiring and plugs are still present or if the wiring will need to be rerun.

You can try looking on ebay or contacting plyhammersparts for the used parts needed. The headlight bar mechanism and motor might be shared with the 944 (a good thing), but not sure.

To achieve the stock appearance, you would be best served to download a copy of the PET from the Porsche website and then study the headlight system. Sourcing the parts from dismantlementers will save you a fair amount of money.

If you have no openings where the headights go - it sounds as though you have custom fenders...perhaps fiberglass? If so, you'll need to source used ones as well.

924 and 944 headlight parts will not work in a 968. You need 968 specific parts. Each headlamp has it's own bucket, motor, hinge, mount, trim, retaining ring, lens and bulb. You can sometimes find complete headlight assemblies which would be your best bet over sourcing each individual component.

my 944 has driving lights just below the bumper , are they still there? maybe they can be made brighter?
I guess just adding a rooftop lightbar like the off roaders do, could work but it's probably not going to pass any government inspection like that. I believe the headlights have to be within a certain distance of the road. That said there are plenty of 4x4 on the roads that are jacked up and way higher, and then they shine right in your back window.
