recommended differentials

So I might rebuild my current tranny, and add a diff while at it. I have been told that the factory LSD wears out, so I'm supposed to get an aftermarket diff (something with 'worm' gears or something like that). Some people tell me a Quaife. What model should I be looking at, how much should it cost, and where should I get it from? Pelican sells one, with 'torque biasing', as opposed to limited slip... I'm trying to dog through threads and figure out what the hell all of this is about... No matter what, i want a diff that needs no maintenance.

... and now, I found the same diff (I think) on the powerhausII website for $900. Is this thing any good? http://www.phii.net/new/sale.cfm

So the search button has helped me a bit. TORSEN = Torque sensing. This is one type of LSD, the other is viscous coupling. I am under the impression that torque sensing is better for some reason, and viscous coupling is cheaper. What I don't know is what kind of LSD the OEM option is. Also, I think the Quaife is a TORSEN-type, but does this mean that all torsen type diffs are maintenance free? The differential on the powerhaus page says it is a torque-bias diff. Is that the same as a TORSEN? Last edited by rammstein; 06-14-2003 at 10:38 AM..

Drivers Ed and AutoX for now, being completely inexperienced. Maybe someday actually race wheel to wheel, but thats years away. Also will be driving on street. I've also now found a Quaife diff for $1195. Would this be it for cost, or do I need extra stuff when I have an oil cooler?

From my research, it seems that if I wanted to put a Torque bias diff in, I will need an oil-pump drive thing to work with the oil cooler. Is this true?

severe usage (track) warrants a cooler under most conditions. i forgot to mention that my new powerhausII toeque biasing diff was only $900. its about $150 to install if no other parts are needed, but im going at least for new side bearings and seals. and while its apart a through inspection to see if it needs any rebuiling, thats 12-1800 if no damage is done.
