Sure but I am not up on 83's but will see if you have the same MAF...On the MAF housing you should see a square black box w/a connection. Look to the left and down and there should be a 1/2" aluminum plug or cap flush with the intake housing. See if you can locate that first then we can go from there. The cap is put there at the factory to keep DYI'ers from messing with the preset rich/lean mixture. See what you can find and get back to me. Sman

it seems to me that since the problem is so specific that it isnt a distibutor cap or rotor problem. if you take off the cap you should be able to easily see if the contacts look good or not.
also if you start it at night and look under the hood and see any sparks arcing, that would indicate a problem

This is a shot in the dark but if you had put larger plug wires on and left the old coil in maybe the plugs aren't getting enough volts to spark properly. I remember something about this from high school physics.

umm…you may need to give the DME a little more credit….the book says the signals from lambda sensor (O2), speed (rpm) sensor, air flow meter, temperature sensors, throttle position switch, etc, all let the DME control the fuel injectors ‘dwell’ or pulse time to maintain the ‘stoichiometric ratio’…the air/fuel mixture that is ‘ideal’

All true however when these engines wear out and have high mileage the DME isn't capable of adjusting the air/fuel mixture. It will only adjust within it's peremeters. "Ideal" is set at new engine and will only be able to set ratio to a degree but once the motor is worn the rich/lean settings are out of the range of the DME and needs adjusted at the mixture screw under the plug cap. The cap is placed there for keeping the DIY'ers from adjusting it. Take the cap off and hook up the gas analyizer at the exhaust tip and get the 02 readings then you can adjust the screw according to the exhaust reading results. Make sense?! Sman
