Can I delete this green thingy?

I think it is part of the emissions system and the connector plastic to the hose broke off.
Can I cap the vacuum hose take it out and be done with it?
What do later models have in its place?

Mine is black on my '85, maybe you could try and paint it. Dunno if you need it though, I am assuming yes you do.

Isn't that the vacuum canister? Vacuum=good running car. I'd leave it alone.

Hey Xray,
if this is your engine then it is NOT part of the emissions system since yours is euro model. I guess I'll keep it, paint it and somehow replace/redrill a vacuum fitting to it.

BTW - I use that pic all the time, its perfect. Have your copywrite attorney talk to my copywrite attorney

For starters, let me explain what it is and what it does.

That is a vacuum reserve canister. When the engine is at idle, it sucks some of the air out of that canister for use when you are on the gas and vacuum is limited. This is more of an issue in a turbo car than an NA. It helps to maintain a set vacuum in the climate control system.

The vacuum that is held in reserve operates the climate control system. If it was removed in a turbo car, every time you got into boost, the heater valve and flap actuators would move from the boost. If removed in an NA, you would most likely notice changing temperatures and airflow because of the vacuum changes at various throttle positions and RPM ranges.

So... in a nutshell, you don't want to take it out.

Brilliant explaination. I shall keep it, cherish it, fix it and paint it to look really cool in my engine compartment.

Ok, after drilling into, inspection and repair with a piece of vac. hose and "Automotive Goop" I finally know what this thing is....

A very expensive hollow piece of green plastic.

Yep, totally hollow, no special ingredients or nozzles etc. The repair was really easier than expected. (will post pic later)

I will now paint and consider moving to the other side of the firewall, just center from the battery.

Ha Haaaaaa,

While 97x may very well be crazy I actually DID use a pic from his engine compartment for my post.

I always scavenge pics that I like or find useful(don't have to take it myself). That way when I go to post I can add a pic in a few seconds.

Yes, I did steal X's engine compartment.......

It could happen to you next!!!

OMG, back off TCM - just cause you have an outrageous amount of time and money to throw at one of those over rated and under compressed "turbos" doesn't mean we think that you're cool.

Oh wait - what is that spit coming out of my mouth - rabid, or drooling, who knows?! That's beautiful work you've done - seriously. I dream of a day when I find the time to really clean up the bay like that.

By the way: your pic doesn't show the vacuum canister.
