Can you believe this?

There are people that actually think a 944 is a real Porsche? Uh oh, wrong board. Really I thought this was the 911 board!

i know Kurt is only teasing, but I have to comment on this whole "not a real porsche thing"...

What is the basis for the "not a real porsche" argument? The 914-4 and 924 didn't have Porsche engines. The 944 DID, but was built in an Audi factory. Does this make it "not a real Porsche?" By that logic, the Boxster isn't a "real Porsche" either because many are built in Saab factories.

What else? The fact that the 944 was an offshoot of the 924, which was originally designed for VW? So? It was designed BY PORSCHE for VW.

Also, 911 seem to forget that the first 356s had VW engines....

Who's driving the REAL Porsche now?

As I recall, when the 901 (911) came out all of the 356 guys said that the 911 was not a real Porsche...

"Really I thought this was the 911 board!" - quote

911 owners seem to be confused easily and often.

I, personally, do not really like the styling of the 911. The 944 has very similar lines but done in a more "evolved" way. I guess that is why our cars have a sequentially higher number. 911 is just above 356 correct?

History lesson time:

The "not a real porsche" arguement has been going on since approximately early 1964 with the first announcement of "Typ 901" (since renamed 911)

The hardcore, dedicated 356 fans maintained "that isn't a Porsche"

911 was produced, sold in record numbers, grudging acceptance by 356 crowd. 911 design remains (essentially) unchanged for the next 32 years

1966: 912 introduced, 911 AND 356 crowd claim "not a real Porsche"

1970: 914 Introduced 911 and 356 owners interpret this as the "breaking of the 7th seal forshadowing the apocolypse". 912 owners are grudgingly accepted into the Porsche crowd - at least their car LOOKS like a Porsche. 914 later disavowed by Porsche AG "It was the 70's, lots of drugs..."

1977: 924 introduced: The first watercooled Porsche (and a collaboration with VW) Uses a motor built by Audi (never mind the Porsche family and its offshoots have a significant interest in all three companies) Porsche owners world wide wait for the bowels of hell to open Porsche owners collectively chant: "Not a real Porsche"

The battle lines between aircooled (airheads) and watercooled (wetheads) are firmly established. PCA events are never the same again. Families are divided.

1977: 928 introduced Intended to displace the 911 as the "flagship" vehicle. Widely regarded as an overpriced white elephant (though very fast) the 928 is the "boxster" of the late 70's - mid 90's Maintenance costs rival GNP of small African countries.

1983: 944 introduced: 944 owners are judged the same as 924 owners, despite having a "real" porsche engine More 944 are sold during its production run than the previous 10 years of 911\930 production. Due to large numbers and lower costs, Porsche is now within the price range of people that could not afford one before. They still, however, cost a *****load of money to maintain.
Introduction of term "poor-man's Porsche"

It is during this time period that 356 owners enter a state of torpor - searching old junkyards for usable parts

1992: 968 - a 944 spinoff, incorporating the best of the 924 and 944 (24+44=68...DUH!) Though intro price is $50K+, it is still regarded as a "cheap Porsche" Not sold in large numbers due to market saturation of 944's

1997: Boxster The first car not named after a number (factory designation Typ 986) Embraced by yuppies everywhere. condemned by most of the Porsche crowd because; 1, it was built in Finland; 2, it was mid engined (a la 914); and 3, it was watercooled

"Airheads" wait for the sky to fall.

1998: 996 First major design change to 911 series, the 911 is now watercooled

"Airheads" consider blood sacrifice to restore status quo.

2003: Cayenne: Porsche meets the soccer mom. Porsche owners unite in their loathing.

You mean they built a car other than the 911 before the boxster?

Did you know that Porsche also made motorcycles?

Really.

The Harley-Davidson VR-1000 engine (A.K.A. V-Rod) was designed by the Porsche design group. So I guess we should actually call them Harley-"P"-Davidsons.
