ok heres the short story...
i bought headers and test pipe from huntley..they are bursch. I put them in and it sounded like a lawnmower. I thought that i might have muffler stopped up so i took the muffler out and it didnt sound like there was anything stuck in there when i shook it. I also made sure that all the bolts where tight and checked for any exhaust leak. I also made sure that the gaskets where good between the headers -testpipe-catback. Does anybody have any ideas????????? PLEASE HELP...im embarrased by the sound ![]() 1984 944 N/A Msds intake nitrous headers testpipe port and polish valve grind coil ------------------ Por-sha ...please say it right.. |

Does the test pipe use a resonator?
Are you using the stock muffler? Usually when you yank the cat the exhaust gets VERY loud, especially without a resonator. |

I have a hollowed out cat (kinda tricky to do on a 944), it sounds beautifull to me! (The problem is, since one side of the cat is curved, you can't simply stick a broomstick in it, and bang it out. Or rather you can't see what you're doing that well!).
Anyway, if your muffler is original/tired, or cheap, it'll rattle a lot. I'd get a different muffler, like a magnaflow. Be ready for a better, however louder still noise. Ahmet ------------------ It's all the driver... |

I have a '84 944n/a and I am thinking of taking the cat out and putting a straight pipe in. How loud is it? I do some highway driving and I don't need a overpowerful rumble to drive me nuts on a trip. You guys always talk about a test pipe? what is it what does it do?

A test pipe is simply a pipe that goes in place of the catalytic converter.
A resonator is a mini muffler and is usually used to take boomy resonances (the kind that annoy you while cruising down the highway) out of your exhaust system. They always go somewhere before the main muffler and after the cat. |

re: broomstick
You can also cut a hole in the top of the cat, air-chisel the guts out, and reweld the top on...not that I would modify my cat...that being illegal and all...but I've uh, seen it done. can't broomstick the S2...it's curved. ------------------ Chris 90 944 S2 Cabriolet |
