need price estimate on my 944 problem

well im going to be buying my first porsche! its 85 944 na. it has some nice tasteful mods like a chip, turbo wheels, exhaust, and some interior do dads like a new shift knob and momo steering wheel. the guy thats selling has incountered a problem and wants rid of it since he'd rather put the $ into his house. its 2,k for the car. well i guess he says it needs a new ring and pinion or a clutch. he said that he pulled out of an intersection and it like seized up the tranny or something. well he took it back to the porsche place and they told him 9 times out of 10 its the ring and pinion or the clutch. im not going to buy it until i know for a fact what is wrong and how much its going to cost to fix. i know a porsche tech guy so i think i can get the work done cheaper. i guess im asking what do you guys think it is? he said that the car didnt shut off. and how much for the parts and how hard is it to fix?

Not worth over $1,000 if a "newer" 85 with the modern looking dash. About $500 if the older 84 with the square gauge cluster dash.

Too bad all those dollars spent on fluffy cosmetics were not put into the maintenence. Junk yard trans $500 (if you can find one) Rebuilt trans $1,500. Clutch job minimal $400 -- full; $1,200.

Then if the timing belt has let go add another $1,300. Best to replace these at short intervals then it's just $50 for both belts.

Now if you shop around you can get a decent documented 944 for four to five thou!

When was the last time you changed your timing and balance belts and/or cam chain and tensioner?

I'd pay 2k for it as long as it was running good....I'm just like that.
Sounds like the mods and wheels etc almost equal the price.

As with any 44 though EXPECT to put a grand into it when you first buy it, over the clutch job. A car of that age will need lots of rubber parts replaced, timing belts/rollers/waterpump if no service records, and a helping heaping of tlc.

I think it's worth it on your first one, although I may not do it the second time around with my future 951!

You are going to find the opinions just offered the same accross the two boards you've asked this question of.

There is no magic bullet for a beat up 944. If you want a hobby car buy it. But don't spend over $1,000 as you are going to be putting at least $2,000 into it to get it back on the road.

I think the investment in time and money to keep a 944 out of the junk yard well worth it. Then I've been spoiled by a 944 for almost 20 years.

As for a price, I guess whatever people here say is fair, cause I don't really know either. Any suggestions?

Hmmm, rammstein, willing to sell a good input shaft and possibly the 5th gear assembly? I tore off my 2nd gear!
