OK, I bled the cooling system like suggested (twice actually, once yesterday, once today) seeemed to help at first.
Took the car for nice leasurely drives yesterday and this morning. The car never spit up coolant. This afternoon I drove it harder than normal. When I got home and shut it off, coolant was spitting out for five minutes. I took the cap off (after it cooled a little) and refilled the expansion tank. It took over 48 oz. to fill it back up to minimum. That seems like a lot to me. Something is wrong. and I'm not sure that bleeding the system is the correct answer anymore. Suggestions? ------------------ Timm '88 924S |

Where was the coolant coming from, you didn't overfill the expansion tank did you?

A leaking head gasket can cause overheating problems.

Hi Timm, sounds like you got problems, first to help with the diagnosis, one of thre things most likly in order, head gasket blown, cracked head, cracked block, see if there is any coolant in the oil, if not then I am thinking cracked head... remove the spark plugs and crank it over while it is hot, see if any coolant comes out..... if coolant is being burned there will be rust on the tip of the suspected plug, if no coolant comes out then, possibly a cracked block..........now did you ever have the car overheat, or be running hot say over the 3/4 mark for a long period of time??? If so then you may have some serious engine problems, also did you ever replace the oil cooler seals?..... One other thing to try while it is hot, get a pressure tester and pump it up and remove the plugs and see if any of the cylinders fills with coolant..... keep us posted......Stan |

How old is your overflow cap? Is an actual porsche part? Try replacing it with a dealer part. I have seen this fix exactly what you are describing and it is much cheaper than the head!

It's fixed!!!
It WAS the cap! I replaced it after the radiator and thermostat were replaced. It had a weak spring... The replacement cap WAS NOT a genuine part. My mechanic pressure tested the system, bled the system and replaced the cap with a genuine replacement (Behr). It appears that the "Auto Parts Store" replacement cap may hold the right pressure, but it's not long enough. Hmmm. Thanks for the help an suggestions. ------------------ Timm '88 924S |
