calling all speed freaks
I'm just curious how often you guys speed on an average day?
what do you generally go on the freeway - 60 - 80 - 100? how many times do you floor it? right now while my exhaust has a hole in it I'm stuck on my bike It tops out at 120 (just a 600) so thats what I get up to every day (yes I am that guy - in the t shirt - going in between the cars but never a porsche!) I'm pretty sure the car is faster and handles better (I have a bent fork) It's getting worse too 110 mph is now like 80 My heart wont start beating fast until far beyond 100 thats why I'm selling the bike - it's boring I want to turbocharge a bike...mmm People often think I'm trying to impress them when I take them for a ride (as you prob think I am as well) but it really sucks, I want to go back to 16 when 68 mph was flying down the road! I would be less worried about cops, luckily though I have never been caught intentionally speeding; otherwise I would have gone to jail! what about you? |
i normaly drive about 90-100, i floor it when it all open and clear a head of me, never in traffic, unless i need to prove to a ricer that his car sucks even after $10000 worth of BODY work done to it. havent had a chance to max it out though, once i was racing a BMW X5 and we were doing slightly over 140 but he got off and my radar detacktor started going off so i slowed down.
those days when i was 16 i had BOSS 302... ive never gone 68 and had my heart thump, and that was only 3 years ago... |
i generally drive 10-15mph over the limit, unless that urge grabs me...
|
i always speed, and i should probably slow it down until i get a radar detector
i usually go 80 on the local highway which is supposed to be 65, and whenever it's clear in front of me, i usually get it to 90-100 but in top gear, the fastest i've ever gone in my 944 is 110 |
I usually cruise 70ish on the freeway, until I get my 944 it's going to stay that way :(
There is one portion of freeway where I usually step on it to see how fast I can go, the fastest I've ever been was 110 in my 1991 Honda Accord. As soon as I get the 944, I expect that I'll be taking the parkway more often  |
I hardly ever go more than 5 over. If not for lots of other reasons but that the porsche (no matter the type) is a friggin cop magnet. I've been pulled over for speeding when it was the lady next to me, just cuz i was driving the pcar and she was in a forester.
That and going really fast will get you killed...Maybe not today, but someday that's probably how it'll end. Too many unpredictables on a given day. Not that i fear dying, i just like it the way it is. |
i probably break 90 once a month, if that...
|
When i had my 44, 80-100 on a daily basis. Fastest i got it up to was 130.
|
No, I'm not going to answer that!
But, I'm also not going to lock this thread down. However, I must point out a couple of things: 1. Speeding on public roads is dangerous: get your thrill for speed on the track. 2. Posting such information here is opening up a can of worms for you: all you need is a local police officer to catch wind of your posts, and he'll be on the look-out! Disclaimer: Neither I nor Pelicanparts condone speeding on the streets. -Z-man. |
I got a ticket last night. 77 in a 55. Speeding sucks.
|
It's not speed that kills. It's the sudden stops! :D
|
just got an email.......my friends niece(19 yrs old and at FSU) was jogging and was killed by a motorist.................don't do 120mph...............that's just not smart.
|
All the rural freeways in Texas have 70 mph speed limits. On roadtrips, armed with my Passport Solo, I drive 80-90 mph for hours at a time. I don't exceed 95 because if I was caught, I couldn't take defensive driving to drop thre ticket.
Speeding within city limits is just plain stupid. |

My wife knows I post here so I can't answer the speeding question. I HAVE NEVER BEEN PULLED OVER FOR SPEEDING IN THE 944.
|
TIMES PULLED OVER IN VARIOUS CARS:
1986 Jeep Cherokee: 4 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee: 3 1987 Ford Crown Victoria: 2 1983 Porsche 944: 1. |
I got pulled over once for speeding, man was I flying! 40mph! in a 30 :(
Stone Mountain Park too... just a warning tho (was in 944). I have never driven the '44 over 100mph, ever, even when taking the back of the pack during our cruise at 944 fest... (heh, was interesting playing catchup). Infact, today, I got a rush just from passing some slow guy on a two lane hwy, drop to third, about 5k rpm, let off at redline, slow down and move back over :) THAT was fun! lol. Auto-x :) Do that. Takes care of most speed requirements. One of the most peeved I've ever been in traffic, was when I had the '44 for a few months, sitting in almost stop and go bumper to bumper traffic in atlanta. All of a sudden this noise destroys my left eardrum... It was actually another red 944 FLYING by, shooting through traffic like crazy, guess he wanted me to catch him. Pissed me off thinking, someone is gonna think that is me. But whatever (I didn't have the balls to try to catch him... LOL). |

Even though I know this won't change your riding habits one bit, let me tell you a story or two. A few years ago when my eldest brother first got his license my dad let him take his Saab 9000S. He took me, my sister and my other brother for a ride to the mall, just out for a cruise. On the way home as we stopped at a redlight a guy on a bike with no insurance, no license, no helmet and wearing jeans a a tee shirt ran into the back of us. He hit at about 120, said the cops. The trunk was pushed up into the back seats where my brother and I were sitting, and the car was moved a good 25 feet into the interesection. I bet you're wondering what happened to the ride. Well, he went over the top of the car, hitting it with his head and landing about 75 or 100 feet in front of the car. After taking a few seconds to figure out just what the hell had happened, we got out of the car to see if he was still alive. At 5 years old, I was standing in the street watching someone die in front me. He was literally drowning in a pool of his own blood. Head to toe, he was covered. His head was split open, he was bleeding from his ears, nose, mouth and eyes. None of us knew what to do. What do you do? We stood there for really only a few seconds, but it seemed longer. Finally my sister got a brainstorm and got us all to go across the street to the McD's to call the police. I bet you're really wondering what happened to him after the police got there. He was taken to the hospital, obvioulsy, without much of a chance. Yes, they did manage to "save" his life. I said "save" because for the next 4 or 5 years he was sitting in a coma in the hospital. Eventually he came out of it, but he's a vegetable. To satisfy his "need for speed", it cost him basically his life. To put in monetary terms, it cost him $1,860,000.00. And that's just for the coma years. My sister now works at a hospital and told me it costs about $1,000/day just to stay there. That figure isn't even for the medical treatment which I assume was quite expensive. How's that 120 grab you now? Let me tell you another story. A few years back, I think around 4 years ago, my sister and I were coming home and there was another motorcycle accident on the same road (about a mile up from where we were hit). Apparently, some guy on a bike decided to race. Someone pulled out. An SUV driver misjudged the speed and distance of the bike, thinking that it was a car with only one working head light. The SUV pulled out, and the bike hit the back of the SUV doing 150 miles per hour. There wasn't a piece of glass left in the SUV, the impact shattered it all. The impact was so severe it snapped the rear axle. The rider took flight about 125 yards down the road. I shouldn't even have to tell you he died on the scene. From what I understand from the paramedics, it was stomach turningly gruesome, like something from a horror movie. I don't care how good you think you are, or how fast your bike is or how big your cock is, riding that fast on public shoots is like shooting dice for your life. Bottom line is, no matter how fast you are, you're not fast enough to avoid a situation like the ones above, and countless others. You may think you're the next Mat Mladain, or Mic Duhamel, but riding like you do you're really only looking at becoming the next statistic. There's a reason a good number of professional motorcycle racers don't hold road going licenses for bikes, it's dangerous. Even if you aren't speeding, it's dangerous. Anyone want more stories? I'm sure between my dad who used to be a firefighter, my brother's friends and people I know, I can dig up a few good ones. If anyone wants to see what a Saab looks like after a bike hits it, I'm sure I can scan some pictures. Thanks for giving motorcyclists a bad name. |
Speeding on public roads is just a bad idea. We have all probably done it. Some of us have been luckier than others.
|
if you've got a speed addiction (like most of us here) be wise and take it out on the track. i love to go fast but experience just shows that speeding on public roads is outright dangerous for yourself and everyone else
i know this and that's why i autocross. it feels so much better to wring the neck out of your car and not worry about the legality and the potential danger i really do suggest you give it a shot |
think you're a great biker? just stopped for a guy who crashed his bike on the highway right in front of me......doing only 60 mph. he was just cruising when something on his bike locked up and he started skidding really quickly, laid it down, bike burst into flames.....road rash from hell and probably broken wrist and leg. think you got that one covered.........especially at 120?

ASSuming what?
no I'm not a great rider, never thought I was.
no I dont have a big &*^^ (like the guys in big trucks). I just like to go fast that's all. Evreyone has thought about the consequences at one point and said ^%$% it I live for speed what else is there? I have had some close calls two people misjudged my speed once and I was nearly sandwiched by their truck and a suv **** happens. didn't mean to disturb the bee hive! http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/spankA.gif Edited for content. -Z-man |

your consideration does not go beyond yourself and personally i find that frightening |
This is all why my bike has been in the garage for the past 3 years. It is so easy to get used to doing 130-140 on a daily basis and like you guys have said it is just a matter of time. Like a crack addiction I had a speed addiction. Soon 80mph wasn't enough. next 100mph wasn't enough. Next was 140 and soon that got boring. Dangerous..... I am trying to break my addiction now. Has anybody else experianced this? Getting used to insane speeds?
|
man sounds like u guys get away with alot! built up areas here are limited to 50km/hr. rural/ highways is 80-100km/hr. cops here allow 10kph over the limit as courtesy only, so we can still get booked by a cop having a bad day if ur doing 55kph. if we want to do over 100kph legally we have to take it to the track altho it doesnt stop some people...

I am very interested. Should I contact my local PCA or what? I live in WI which mostly has oval tracks for the NASCAR weenies. Help me!

Hi other time!
I think all of ours like speeding...but we cannot loose the sense of reality.I had set my 951 at 155 mph on the highway....but that was only one time, the time you use to see how fast can go...But there were no other cars,it was at 3 a.m.,highway was in very good shape and i have no risks. Daily driving,i usually cruise at about 70 mph (to save fuel),but sometimes i go about 90-120 mph cruising...another time, when traffic allows it,and i have no more risks than driving at 60 mph.You know is safer to go with this car at 100 mph than 60 with many others.I´m not crazy, i´ve never done slalom with cars,or speeding with others at short distances,or stupid and risky things like that. I´ve suffered few accidents,no one for speeding, and no one´s my fault. And i have no tickets due to speeding...well...i have tickets for nothing. Someone talked about the "need for speed".. I suggest you to try the computer game "Need for speed 5 Porsche unleashed"...it´s really good and you can try almost every porsche ´till 2000 (of course 944 too),and if you crash you can reset it all... |
88 944 Turbo S Speed
I've had my Turbo S on Talledega Superspeedway at 155
|
Man, I love to speed man but it seems the only time I really do it is when I'm drunk or after blowing a line of coke man. It's sooo awesome when I put my life and the lifes of others at risk.

i SERIOUSLY hope you are kidding |
speed is relative. it always depends on the situation, the equipment and most importantly, the driver. I do speed on public roads occasionally but am always mindful of the situation and conditions. just remember, even if you can handle the speed it doesn't mean those around you can. response time is everything.
|
I agree with Ronin. It's one thing speeding on a dual cariage highway, another on a 2 lane road. Visibility, traffic density etc all need to be taken into account. Have done my 120mph but that is rare and its on a dual highway at 6am. When we go on the club runs some of the guys do take chances but we are split into two groups-I go with the slow group (can't think of running with GT3's,Carrera 4s's and the turbos). I also worry about the rural kids and livestock running across roads.
Have had 3 serious accidents on motorbikes, one when I broke my leg, and these have been through other drivers not stopping at stop streets or traffic lights or dogs running in front of me. emwporsche, being a biker has actually made me more cautious than most people I know as you have to be alert for the unexpected. There is no metal cage to protect one on a bike. The problem with our cars is that you do not feel the speed the way you would with other cars so the speed tends to creep up unawares. |
I'm not saying...
I do it always
but my current schedule allows me to have open roads for very long straits, and inner city is a no-no. once I was stuck in a turn only lane and had to go strait. There was a car a ways ahead of me and I was forced to floor it and hope that I passed him before my lane dissapeared. I didn't make it. the car reached the curb before I was totally passed him and I was stuck driving between the curb and this car before I zipped by. I slowed for the next light, a guy stopped who saw what happened and asked if I was looking to get killed. (I think I replied no, but I was still a little speechless) It was not as if I wanted to be stuck in that situation, it just happened. 10 seconds is all it took. Riding has made me an increasingly better driver (especially to other bikers) as for 'white - lining' it, those are under serious circumstances the most dangerous drivers for me are the ones that try to get out of my way, I have already calculated their speed, position, and possibilites it seems to me that riding with traffic is more dangerous than going slightly faster than them (if possible) my life is in their hands - I don't like that going 5 faster than them allows me to put my life back in my hands |
I'm not even touching this one
|
Mixed opinions everywhere it would seem...
I don't agree that going 5mph faster puts your life back in your hands, If you're in traffic and you want to get out of trouble, pull back! Personally, if I'm insure as to someones ability to handle the road they are driving on (which lets face it is an every day occurance), make sure they are in front of you where you can see them! I had this justthe other day, a guy in a little Metro (70mph (top) compact hatchback found in England) was following, it was wet, he was too close behind me. Fortunately I saw him and when someone did brake in front of me, I braked and (thanks to ABS) steered to the side of the road, the Metro locked up and stuffed himself right into the back of the car that was in front of me. Fortunately no-one was injured. The point is that with great power, comes great responsibility. There are always gonna be nutters who see a porsche an think they can have a go, they can, and they can keep up with you up to about 100mph on a highway but if you brake, they will be sat in your back seat because there is no way they will stop. Let them go past, drop a couple of mph and when they're safely out of your way, return to YOUR safe speed. Whatever speed you drive, you should be comfortable with any eventuality. I used to think racing was about going fast, having now done it (on tracks) I now know that it is about driving as smoothly as possible. Driving as fast as possible actually takes seconds off your lap times because you are constantly on the ragged edge. Just my opinion, you are welcome to yours, but if you're ever behind me and I pull in, think about slowing down a bit - maybe I know something you dont... To answer the question, I speed only when I feel the conditions are safe to do so: Dual or more carriageway, dry conditions, no other cars, no chance of pedestrians, car in FULL working order, know the road, No COPS, cameras etc... |
"i SERIOUSLY hope you are kidding"
Um, he was at a party about a week ago and didn't even touch one beer because he knew he would be driving home in a few hours. I think it was fairly obvious due to his tone that he was kidding. He's not a rock star... yet. |
I used to speed a lot and special leaving in Europe.
Sure i lost few friends on a motorcycle accidents,i was just lucky not the best as i thought then. Now..I got the VFR ,the 944,951 and i love the acceleration but not the speeding part.To many people driving while they talk on the phone ,eating, reading etc.etc. My mom had said to me ones..You know Nick !!! Die it's easy, loose a leg or become a veg is the hard part. The picture of me on a wheelchair it was enough to slow me down. |
By the way, i live near seattle and have friends who travel down there extensively. I'll make sure they keep an eye out for you, dangerboy.
