I have searched the board here, but have not found a solution yet. I was wonder where to start for trouble shooting the speedometer and odometer not working from one day to the next.
I drove my 86 944 NA on Sat. and they worked fine, but Sun. they did not. Nothing was done to the car in between those times and nothing unusual happened on the Sat. drive. I checked the wire connection on top of the transmission in the rear (above the CV joint) for the speed sensor, at least that is the only thing I could find with a wire connector that was remotely close to what the Haynes manual, posts from here, and the parts manual I have described. I could not find the connector that has 2 wires going to it (where is that) that was shown in the parts manual exploded view. I have done a few things myself on this car and plan on doing as much as I can, but still am unfamiliar with the locations of everything. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks |

I went through the intermittent Speedometer/Odometer for nearly two years on my 86 944. The solution was replacement of the speed transmitter, the unit you mention that is on top of the transaxle. If it was just the odometer, the most likely cause is the speedometer (instrument Panel) assembly gear. The Speed transmitter was $55.80 plus shipping from Jacksonville, FL dealer to Atlanta. The electrical connector for the transmitter is the same rig as the fuel injector.

Hi Fury the speed sensor is on the left hand drivers side of the trans axle it is in front of the cv joint it has a fuel injection type connector the reverse lites are ont passenger side in back of the cv joint, sounds like you might want to pull the sender out first to see if there is anything loose you might loose some oil when you do this be careful as there is a gear that might come out with the sender it can stay in there but you might want to look at it anyway, if you dont see anything obvious then replace the sender......Stan |
