you too can learn from the Porsche 933

hello,

i took a ton of high-res photos of a Porsche 933 this past weekend. the owner of the car was telling me all about it. unfortunately, he threw a rod and his weekend was cut short.

if you want to learn from the ultimate high-power 2.0 liter Porsche, feel free to check out the pics:

enjoy!

is obin trying to put one over on us? i've never heard of a 933 before; but then again, i had my first "taco" last week. they are very tasty, and i hear they're popular in some places.

do u see the cam sprocket and how the timing belt is not centered in engine compartment pic...some metal is showing on the cam sprocket...mine was a bit more metal showing than that, and my belt snapped right off because of it, i don't know why the belt doesn't center on tehse cars, weird stuff.

Question

LOL Blackfoot!

However, after looking at the pics, one thing strikes me as weird... The CV axle driven alternator, what do you think the purpose of that is?

I have a few ideas, but would like to hear other opinions (or facts if anybody's up for it), less rotational mass on the engine, less parastic drag when not in gear, better throttle response, better weight distribution, etc. Anybody wanna chip in?

Wink

the 933 is one of the rarest Porsches. there were 16 made, and only 8 are left. the other 8 were destroyed in shunts.

that one was recently purchased. over $100,000 was spent 10 years ago when it was professionally raced.

the engine is a STOCK 924 2.0 litre engine with a STOCK bottom end. the car can push out 195Hp with ease. it weighs 1901lbs. the owner ws having oiling problems with the car, and it threw a rod on the back stretch of Watkins Glen.

the ignition is electromotive, and it is a dry sump system with the oil reservoir in the back of the car. the centre of the car is stock, but the rear frame and front frame is all tube. the car sounded absolutely awesome... like a can-am 2.0 litre car.

also note the alternator is in the back of the car driven off of the CV, and the oil pump is mounted under the intake manifold. the induction system was weber carbs (because it was raced in SCCA and we all know just how high tech SCCA is ).

the muffler runs through the passenger compartment, and exits out the passenger side of the car. the header pipes are custom and there are thermocouples on eacvh one so that exhaust gas temperature can e sensed.

the car could put out over 230Hp in "qualifying" trim, but the owner didn/'t want to push it to that level. the rods were carillo rods, that's what you see in my hand. if you look carefully, you can see the hole it punched in the block.

the rear suspension is coilover, and it is in-car adjustable through a system of levers. note the EASY access to the tranny. pretty cool huh?

any other questions? i took a lot of notes.
