as i mentioned before my car runs hot but the Rad stays cool. At first i believed it was the thermostat, and i finally changed it tonight.
I took it out and placed it in water and heated the water, it worked and opened at 80C like it should. Whatever i put the new one in anyways. I put everything back all the hoses closed all the plugs and so forth....i unscrewed the bleed plug and put the coolant into the res. the i turned the engine on and let it idle. After about 5-10 min there was a lot of steam coming from the bleed plug, ALOT of steam. The car was getting into the "redzone" on the temp guage but the rad was still cool. I turned the car off and left it. What is it?i'm getting no heat in my rad. but the car is running hot. Is it the waterpump?would i get no heat in the rad if the waterpump was dead? |

Take off the timing belt cover start the car and see if the timing belt is driving the water pump. The water pump is on the "slack side of the timing belt arrangement and if the belt is too loose it will not drive the waterpump properly.
I hope this helps, Mark 86' 944NA |

Check your lower level hose to see if it hot or not. I guess not. Does your water pump circulate water? Does it leak or make any sharp noise? Most likely your water pump gone.
I have exact problem you discribed plus my waterpump leaks and dumped most coolant on my way home one time. I'm going to get it changed this week. Eugene |

i had a car long ago that had the same symptoms...it turned out to be a blocked radiator.

the exact thing was going on with my car. I took the radiator in and had it rodded out for $35 bucks they said it was about half clogged put the thing togher and the same stuff was happening. I took out my thermostat and that was the problem on my car. I had the same steam but nothing else when the thermostat was blocked. I'd guess that it's your radiator.

I had similar problem but not as serious. Mine wanted to get hot unless engine was at higher rpm. I suspect it was the pump because when replaced along with thermostats, it worked fine. The inner gasket had dissolved - the little one about an inch in diameter behind the thermostat. Never did figure out the cause, but the ends justified the means in my case.

The car did sit alot, and it might be the radiator. The thing with the waterpump is that it was replaced not too long ago by the previous owener at a shop, so was the thermostat and as thermostat dont have a set life span i tried changing that. But i doubt a waterpump went in a year of not driving the car at all. Plus it makes no sound and is not leaking at all.
I took out the radiator and blew hair threw it using a compressor. Not too hard just to see if it worked, the air was defenetly going through. Could it still be clogged?? My last guess would be.....BIG air pocket inside??is that possible?i know an air pocket could run the car hot but could it run it hot while keeping the rad. cool? |

Are you sure the thermostat installed right? If waterpump is runing, thermostat is open, and radiator is not clogged, coolant should get circulated. As a result radiator should get warm at least.
You may want to run the engine without thermostat. And/or take of the timing belt cover to see the waterpump being driven by timing belt. I don't know the possibility of engine clog. The water pump can be easily checked by shutting off the engine, letting the engine cool down and then reaching down and try to move the pully on the water pump. If the pully moves (forget the v belt), you have a bad shaft or bearings or both and it needs replacement.

Its all good!! took it for a drive and 10 min later i stopped at a friends house and noticed that there was NO coolant in the res. so i added some, then drove around then i took the bleed screw off and kept it running.
There was a huge air bubble in there! |
