So if I don't care about fender flares....
I have read the FAQ's, buyer beware, etc....I am in the market for a 1987-1989 .....So if I don't care about fender flares....is there a significant difference between a 1987-9 944 and 924s? Thanks in advance!

Well, do you care about the interior? The 924S retains the old style dashboard, while the 1985.5 and on 944's had the newer style dash. Besides looking more modern, the new dash did have 30% better air circulation for the AC and heating.
Truthfully, for me, it doesn't matter either way: I like 'em all! -Z.

it depends... the 924S is lighter and therefore quicker, on par with the early 944s and the 89 944 2.7; but the late 944NA is more comfortable and more modern. Take your pick

I have an 89 944NA 2.7 and my cousin has an 87 924s, having driven both I'm glad I have the 944. But then, I also really like my fender flares ;-P

Fender flares help you from slipping when leaning against the car. Also provide that much-needed place to rest your beverage while working on the car. However, 924 steering wheel placement is just right for driving with your knees.

Who really needs fender flares? My wheels from a 87, 951 fit just fine under my narrow fenders! I've driven several 944s, but still love my 924S.

i think the 944 fenders are the tops, really makes the car. however, i prefer early intertior. its more functional and less buick looking. the steering wheel isnt adjustable though, if you are a big guy you may have trouble getting in. im 5'11'' and if i was anything more i think it would really make the car uncomfortable.
i thought there were some slight suspension differences between the two, sway bars maybe? does that ring a bell with anyone else?

Well, the 924 was my cousin's, about a 1987 or so, with maybe 120k on it. My 944 is a 1989, 65k or so, and it has the largest motor in the 944 NA line. That said, aside from my preference for my interior and the look of the flares, my 944 has much tighter handling, crisper shifting and a LOT more bottom end. Some of that stuff you could attribute to her car being more worn, but regardless of the cause for me her car just wasn't as much fun to drive. She actually agreed.....but my car is also worth more than twice the cost of her 924, so in terms of "bang for the buck" she definitely has me beat. Some parts for the 89 944 are also hard to get/expensive, since the car was has many components (motor, exhaust, the hose from the clutch master to clutch slave, etc.) not found on the 88.

Tshabet:
Did her 924 have the 2.0 AUDI engine or the 2.5 Porsche engine (that is in the 924S)? I would think that would make a big difference. When I bought my 1984 944 I considered the 924S for all the above mentioned reasons, lighter, more aerodynamic, less money, and all that with the 944 engine. So being a rational mature middle age adult I considered the available data and cross referenced that with my needs in an automobile of this sort and can to a knowledgeable decision that... FENDER FLARES ARE WAY COOL DUDE! CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT THEM! Ever since I saw a flared BMW back in the 80's I knew I had to have a car like that, but that's just me.

scottmandue, I am almost positive she has the 924s with the 2.5l Porsche engine, but I'll have to double check with her.
Agree with your verdict on the fender flares, I think they add at least another 45hp in style points alone :-)

oops, sorry about the confusion CJFusco! I have a habit of differentiating my car from the turbo and S and S2 series by calling it an NA, even though the S and S2 are Normally Aspirated cars as well. We have the 944 NA, the 944 S or S2, and the 944 turbo (951), and most parts catalogs refer to my car as a 944NA as a distinction from other models, not as an inclusive umbrella definition for all the normally aspirated cars. I should have been clearer.

no prob bob
the best way to differentiate our models, imho, is either "early 944" or the long version: "83-85 944 2.5 8V"
