passing of the guard

I have decided to let my wife have my '84, as she needs a ride to work now. (yeeeeah $$$$). She's an automatic so it'll be easier for her to drive in Fresno "traffic". I've changed about everything out on her, so she aught to be dependable. The car. not the wife. Soo, she doesn't even have a license yet, it'll be like her first car. She drove it around the complex, at least she's not scared of it like she was the Hyundai. It's a safe car, I think it'll be good for her to get around by herself as I won't be home to take her to work every day. Do you think that insurance would kill me since she hasn't had a license (the wife, this time) for so long, and doesn't have the driving exp. that the ave. 30 + year old has. Do they care? Or will she get the same age/marriaged discount that I get for being old and wedded?

Don't know if it is different in California, but here, if you haven't had continual insurance for the past few years, you get put in the same risk category as kids and drunks. If your wife is insured as a driver on your current policy, you should be OK. Otherwise...

I considered getting an auto 944 for my wife, but after seeing her reach for her purse, cell phone, and observe her overall driving habits, I decided against it. Reason: she does not CONCENTRATE like a 944 driver must, because just a twitch of the wheel and you're in the ditch. With her Volvo, she can wiggle the steering wheel all over the place and the car continues to drive in a straight line.

As for Fresno, visit the "Landmark" for dinner, walk across the street and get yourself a Leon Jimenez for after dinner, go back to the Landmark and have a drink on the patio. Think about getting her into something that's safer in the long run, until she "learns to drive". A 944 can be unforgiving, but it would be one heck of a "gift" for her to drive on special occasions when "concentration" is more in the cards than the "everyday routine".

Here is the key. If she did not have a car, then she does not need insurance. If she had a car and a license and did not have insurance you are f**ked.

So, call your insurance company and say "my wife just got a license and I gave her a car. Obviously, she did not drive previous to this....thus had no need for insurance." Then you'll be all set and she will receive all the discounts you have. There is no penalty for not having insurance if you didn't have a car. However, if you have a car a license and no insurance and claim it was in storage....you're still out of luck.

This is what I know from being an Insurance Agent in Colorado. Maybe a little different where you are but I doubt it.
