only have 1st gear Help!

Hi everyone
I have a 85.5 944 only have first gear when I go to put it in any other gear including reverse I have nothing . car acts like it is in neutral there is no grinding noise . Some one told me it is a linkage problem but were very vage about exactly what is the fix is or what to look for? Hoping it is not a internal transmission issue. anything to check for would appreciate any input
Thanks
KC Steve

only have first gear

Get under the back of the car and look on top of the transmission to make sure your shifter rod is tight. It is on the driver side. I think it is held by a 13 or 10 mm bolt cant remember the size right now. It could have come loose or something. Also pull your shift boot up and inspect and make sure were the shift rod connects to your shifter in side the car hasn't popped off, or has alot of slop from being worn out.

Thanks

James

As mention check your gear shift lever inside the car.The pin coming on the shift lever migth be worn.

Linkage shown is on the top of the transaxle (remove left rear wheels, make sure the car is jack safely using jack stands check A this is where your shifter rod couple to the linkage (they will be a lock on it if remove make sure you put it back)also check B-C-&D.Very tigth spot up there so be careful.

Sounds like the connecting bolt (A) (connects the shift rod to the trans linkage) has come loose, check it (make sure the "dimple" in the trans mounted shaft is visible in the hole on the shift rod) and then safety wire it back in place.

"B" could also have come loose...C&D are primarily for the side to side adjustment (centering) of the shifter. If when in neutral, the shifter does not sit in the center of the pattern, C&D are what you use to correct the centering.

Also, when you check the shifter, check the two mouning bolts on the shifter base, these could also be loose.
