first time experience...
i was just wondering what others experience's were when they first purchased or drove a 924/944/968?
for me, being a farm kid all my life dreaming of the day of owning the perfect Vehicle for me, have drivin all kinds of vehicles being brand new off the showroom floor to restored model T's. I've always never felt quit conferted by the way other vehicles have felt while driving. i felt like i was always missing something, felt like i was left in the shadows of driving, even if the other vehicles had a bold apperance and or mass HP it still didnt feel right for me. nothing suited me untill i seen a 944. it was love at first sight!! It was parked next to a RED 1999 Mustang GT convertable and a Black 1987 Corvette T top. Both the Stang and the Corvette just seemed too blah against the Silver 944, the stang and corvette used to be my favorites but... i just couldnt take my eyes off of her. i wipped into the lot and checked her out. The curves of the body, the stance, the vintage looks but still seemed like yesterdays styling of the '85 944 gave me a woody. i walked around her about 10 times guawkishly before the sales-men came walking out with the keys asking if i wanted to take her for a ride. "OH BOY DO I" i sat in the drivers seat, WOW, laid my hands on the wheel OMG. started her up... "oh geez i think i mest my pants" smilling ear to ear ![]() ![]() am i just weird or has anyone else had about this same type of first time experience with their P-car? just wondering...

I was riding my bike and saw a junky 944 sitting in a lot 3 years ago, I then bought it to restore with my dad for $800. I've loved that car from day 1. When I finally got it out on the road about a year later I was ecstatic.

a 911 doesn't have a rotary engine
I just knew i wanted a Porsche since I was about 10 years old. Of course, I always wanted a 911, but it will probably still be awhile until i can afford one. So, my choices were: 1) good 944/924S 2) excellent 924 3) questionable 944S2/Turbo 4) take a risk with a 928/928S 5) restore a 911SC So, i found a VERY low mileage 944 (it had about 35K on it when I bought it) for a ridiculously low price ($3000 back in 2000 - anyone here that has seen my car can attest that it is worth much more) being sold by a PORSCHE MECHANIC. This is a deal i couldn't pass up. Four years later, I have had only one major repair (clutch), and only a handful of minor ones (fanswitch back in 2001, bent wheel last fall, etc), and the car has never stranded me anywhere or given me any worries. It has eaten its share of money in upgrades, but I regret none of those ![]() Four years on, driving the 944 is still incredible. Even tonight it gave me a grin from ear to ear as I'm still getting used to having new tires. I can do things with this car that I wouldn't even CONSIDER attempting with almost any other. For a 21-year-old car, it is amazingly tight, the handling is mind-blowing, and the ride isn't too harsh even with the stiffer suspension. Only complaints? well, we all want a bit more horsepower, don't we? That's the only one I can think of. Recently, the 944 has finally begun to renew some of the acclaim that it garnered back in 1982-84- the early years, before other carmakers caught up to the game. evo considers many 944 series cars to be benchmarks, giving the entire range 4 stars (out of 5), except for the 968 ClubSport, which gets the maximum 5 stars. CAR AND DRIVER claim that the 944's "superb road manners" made it the first entry-level Porsche to make the grade. Since the 944 looks lighter and simpler in light of more complicated and heavier Grand Touring "sports cars" of today, it's reputation is gonna keep getting better and better. Mark my words, in another 10 years, the 944 will be considered a classic.

When I got mine, I had just gotten the word that my truck was going to be repo'd.
So, I asked around to friends etc... to see if anyone knew of a "Cheap" beater to drive . Well, a friend of mine said he had a car sittin out in front of his house that he hadn't touched in months. So of course I was interested. He said it was an 86 Porsche 944. So I asked him how much ( knowing nothing about them money wise ) and he said 15. ( I thought $15,000 ). So, I hind of reluctantly asked " will you take payments ??? " he said well, maybe 2. I then asked Thousand or hundred. He said " 15 hundred ". OK, startin to get a semi.... So I told him I'd be able to give him $800, then the rest in a couple weeks... he had no problem with that. So, I go to his house to pick it up. Expired tags No Smog test But, I got in it and drove it back to downtown LA with a woodie the whole time. I still drive it like that. I love my car.

Hear hear!
Keep those babies clean and keep fixin' em up - they're going to be worth a bunch in the not-too-distant future! Of course, I'd never even consider selling mine and I don't care what someone else says she's worth - she'll always mean more to me!

When i was on my way to buy my first porsche, i was feeling very upset for waking before noon to drive to murrietta. After a quick visual and checking the usual suspects, the car was in need of wheel bearings and a good wash n wax. This '83 944 was mine.
I drove it home, with the top in the back, racing my dad in and out of lanes (my dad has a '91 964 (look up newmoe)). We had a blast that day. But, unfortunately I didnt know how to tame the power that was 944 under the hood and the car has left me. My second porsche (1977 924) was a piece of ****, in all respects. The only good thing going was that everything was in the car (literally) and the paint wasn't too far gone. I've finally gotten the car driveable. Since i've been driving a '70 beetle for the last 10 months, sitting in my porsche and firing it up, taking it for the first drive, was the most joyous moment in my life to date. To be able to say "hey, i worked my ass off for this car to work, and it works!" is very pleasing. I don't hesitate to let a smile widen across my face when i'm in the driver's seat, even though the rear hatch still pops up, my seats are torn and i'm missing ½ the interior, because it's MY porsche that I ressurrected. And it's still faster than half the jap-crap on the road in riverside.

I got my Porsche when my Mom died two years ago. She had two, an 83 - red and an 84 silver/grey. She said "over my dead body" and she meant it. I was driving it home carefully, getting used to the handling/clutch/shifting/steering feel. Found an empty open stretch of road about 20 miles long and opened it up. Thank god the road was straight cause I couldn't turn the wheel with the boner I had. The ability to go through turns with speed is still amazing to me. I used to get home 10 minutes after getting off work, now I take the long twisty way home, and still get home in less time. The suspension is just awesome, especially since my car is old enough to drink! i haven't stopped driving it since

Mein Gott!

The year was around 1985, and I'll never forget. It was love at first sight. I was a grade school tot, and my dad and I were walking into a restaurant on a warm summer evening. The tell-tale whine that I've since become so familiar with was heard, and this brand new Guards Red 944 swings into the parking lot. Out of it comes this guy with a Sonny Crockett-style spikeed haircut (which was cool at the time) and what looked to be his SMOKING girlfriend. I looked up to my dad and said: "whoa - look at that! That's a Porsche!!"
Something burned into my subconcious that night........... Fast forward to sometime in the mid-1990s. As a college goofball, I was bombing around in my TR-6 that I bought for $900. The internet was just starting to come of age and I wondered WHY a Porsche (944) could be so affordable(?) I remember thinking: "Hey, for $6000, I can do this!!" And eventually bought my first one in June, 1999. Almost immediately afterwards, it was a baptism in fire. A belt change is going to cost me HOW much!?!?!? Anyways, I've since learned more & more about these cars while using it as a daily driver. Absolutely love it, too.

My 1985 944
In the spring of 1985, I was in the market for a sports car, and test drove a number of sports cars including a Datzun 300ZX. I was seriously considering buying one, and the Salesman at the Datzun dealership was on the phone, paying my Wife and I no attention for about 10 minutes so we left. There was a Porsche Dealer right up the street and just for the heck of we looked at some Porsche 944’s. My Wife wanted me to buy a safe car; I just wanted a sports car. So my Wife asks the Salesman if it is safe, and he goes on to tell her about the 50/50 weight distribution, excellent brakes and handling, and she is pleased.
I test drove a white 1985 944 (with my Wife in the front and the Salesman squeezed in the back seat), and really liked the way it felt. I had no intention of buying a Porsche because it was too expensive. The salesman says go ahead and pretend it’s your dream car, and let’s see what kind you’d want. I wanted a stone gray model with certain wheels and other options, and they had none in stock. A week or so went buy, I had lost interest, and the salesman calls me up and says a model came in with exactly what you want, I’ll give you a good deal. We drove over to the Dealership, scanned the back lot and did not see anything like what I had wanted. The old bate and switch I thought, then I spotted it. That was it, I bought the car. Fast forward to 2004, after many exhilarating driving experiences and three children along the way, my 1985.5 Porsche 944 (with just 22k original miles) is sitting in my garage. The children, a few Vans, family cars, and day to day work cars prevented my 944 from racking up many miles over the years. I’ve had to replace the timing belt, get new tires, get a cracked windshield replaced, and get the A/C re-charged over the 19 years. It still startups up like new, still has the same new smell inside, and except for a 1” dent that I’m going to have repaired it looks new. I’ll never part with my 1985 944 Porsche. God guys, stop with the phallic comments. If you get a boner in a car and there isnt a naked girl next to you then you have a problem.
Anyways the first time I drove my old 85 I wasnt good with the clutch so it was kinda jerky but when i got her home and got to drive it around it was really an experience ...fast forward a year... I get to test drive my s2 ...the first time i drove that it took my breath away. I had been driving a dodge spirit for about 3 monthes then i hopped in the s2 and took off. The acceleration was amazing and the handling was even more amazing then my old car.

LOL TheCooler.
My 944 experience wasnt love at first sight at all. I didn't know anything about Porsches when i bought the car. Basically i thought it was the best possible sports car in my price range. I started reading about it and it just got stuck in my head. I couldnt beleive it had a transaxle in 1983! Basically i thought it was really good looking, brilliantly designed, cheap, and it wasnt the kind of car you would see with a 3 foot home made spoiler Upon first drive i thought it had a bit of understeer (plus i didnt know how to drive stick which made the drive a bit more unpleasent) Since then ive fallen in love with it more and more. Oh, and it gives me a huge BONER
