Question Where did these wheels come from??

These wheels were on my '91 944 Cabrio. Neither the window sticker nor the option codes show optional wheels, so I assume that it came with the Design 90 wheels and these were mounted later. They look kind of cool, but I was thinking of going to 17" turbo twists when I hit the lottery.

Are these 928 wheels, or what?

Flat dish or 'garbage can lid' wheels is what they are known as.

A 928 wheel.

Ronin, are those wheels chromed? My rear whls are wider in the rear. Are your f/r the same width?

Your car looks fantastic, btw.

thanks! nope, deys iss polished to da maxx. (o.k. enough of that, my head is already starting to hurt ) these wheels are polished aluminum alloy and clearcoated. I don't like chrome, to me it's cheap-looking. they look much better in person and are one of my favorites. I had decided at one time to replace them with turbo twists, but just couldn't part with them. they are 7 inchers (I believe), front and rear, with 205s on the front and 225s in back. the 928 version has a 9 inch wheel that I'm after (haven't seriously pursued it yet though - money is tight right now)

My wheels are 9 inches in the rear, narrower up front. Some similar wheels that I have seen on the 928s appear to be the same with front and rear, so it's still not clear where they came from.

They're chrome too. Magnet won't stick to them, so they must be a chromed alloy (forged). 255/50/16 rubber in back, so they're meatier than stock.

yep, the interesting thing is that the 7 inchers have a 944 and a 951 part number, and the 9 inchers have a 928 part number. I'd like to have the 9ers for a bit wider tire in the rear. that way I could move the 225s to the front and put something like the 255s in back. anyone know of any clearance/rubbing problems with 225s up front?

nope, not chrome. polished aluminum alloy

Polished? Really? They're awfully shiny. I'll have to look more closely next time.

The 255/50/16s in the rear might be a little tall for my car, don't ya think? I was checking tire diameters on tirerack.com and the 255/50s are about an inch larger in diameter (~4%) than stock 225/50, depending upon what tire you look at. Was thinking of going down to a slightly lower profile tire when these Dunlops wear out, if I don't swap wheels.

Yes, that is YOUR opinion. Everybody has their own taste. Otherwise, we'd all be driving Camrys.

I think eventually I will go with something more open, like a 17" cup or twist.

Those wheels were a pretty pricey option when new I believe. Your options sticker should have a code for the optional forged wheels. So whoever wanted them on their car was apparently willing to pay $1000+ extra when the car was new for those wheels.

I personally like them over phonedials.

And I thought 'cookie cutters' was a goofy name. 'Garbage Can Lid'? Hehe, I would love to see someone mentioning something to the effect of "special-option, unique, garbage can lid-type wheels" when trying to sell their car.

Nothing on the sticker or the option code list for optional wheels, so I'm guessing he had them installed by the dealer.

Cookie cutters, phone dials, garbage can lids, manhole covers, twists, cups,...I'm really gettin' an education here.
