Unhappy If you're going to crash...

Make sure you do it in a 944!

Last night on my way home from work, I was faced with an oncoming pair of headlights in the middle of a very narrow and twisty country lane. I swerved to avoid the headlights, my back end slipped on the grass verge and I careered head on into an oak tree at about 40mph. The car stopped dead, the tree came to halfway up the engine on the drivers side. The police arrived, and the accident investigator said I was very lucky to be alive. The car is a wreck, with little hope of repair. But it did without question save my life...

I have a sore neck and shoulders and doctors can see no sign of lasting damage.

I will definitely be buying another 944. I'm just sorry there is one less of these fantastic cars in the world.

I will post some pic's of the damage, for those interested to see just how much of a kicking these cars can take, in a few days.

Bummer

I had just been online admiring your car last night! Hope I didn't jinx you, but I was probably looking at the pics of your S2 after the deed was done, given the time difference between here and there.

Have read a lot of stories about the crashworthiness of the 944. Don't blame you for wanting another! Good luck in your search.

Well you definately picked the right car to crash in, just too bad it was an S2 =P
Hopefully your next 944 will be even better than this one.

One thing I didn't quite get, was the guy on the wrong side of the road? Perhaps you will get your new car paid for.

My girlfriend gives you her condolences.

It's good to hear you're alive and didn't break anything.
Hopefully you will be feeling better in a few days, and maybe use the opportunity to get a 951, for every door that closes, a new one opens =)

Glad to hear that you're ok.

Too bad about the car, but they can be replaced.

That sucks. Will you be buying back the wreckage? Any good bits you can pull to sell on before the Ins. Co. flog it off?

Other driver didn't stop (known in England as a c*nt).
I only had contact with the tree so No whiplash claim. No lawsuit. Just Six years No claims bonus up in smoke and my pride and joy beaten to a pulp:-(

I'm gutted about the car, but like my Dad says - it's only metal. And that metal saved my girlfriend from having to break the news so I'm happy (ish).

Will try and rescue my RS steering wheel and stainless exhaust.

Engine is in bits (some by the side of the road)
Alloys broken
Steering column bent
Gearbox no longer talking to engine

Sadly I'd just spent a considerable amount of time and money overhauling the engine, suspension, brakes and clutch. And I was just thinking to myself, it feels like a new car, when screeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeBaNG!

Thanks for all your kind words - currently looking for Turbo Convertable (may as well go all the way to upgrading!) will keep posting with any developments.

If I can get salvageable bits from car I'll let you guys know (although with postage from UK it may only appeal to a limited few!)

man if we all keep getting in accedents the value of our car will go up because they are getting rarer! good to hear you are ok though.

we should make a list of the type of accedents we can get in and be ok:
hitting a tree dead on at 40mph
slamming into a guard rail sideways at 40
being broad sided bt an SUV
being rear ended by an SUV
driving under the rear end of another car <- exotic recks
hmmm.... what else???

What colour is the interior? I'd be interested in the seat covers if they're black or black / white pin striping.

what wheels are those?

I've seen that design before but they look like 17s and I didn't realize they come in 17s. Maybe its just the euro ride height. Glad you came out of the accident unscathed. That's why we drive heavy German cars!

If you have receipts for the recent engine work, the insurance company may have to add that to your settlement...good luck

Glad you are ok.

It's a shame that in the last years the numbers on these cars have been slowly dwindling. On a good note you're ALIVE. If there's one thing i learned about porsches, its that they were engineered to save lives in the event of a high-speed crash.

I saw a 944 crash on TV once (caught on police camera), snow covered freeway, cars on the shoulder clearing an accident or car problem. When suddenly a 944 lost control and slid on the snow covered road came right at the camera, hit the back of the tow truck, occupant(s) killed.

When I first purchased my 944 back in 1992 it had 54K miles and now it has 160K+ miles. I remember at that time my brother's girlfriend told me her father had a 944 and he was involved in an accident car was totaled and he survived. The way she put it "He was almost killed in it". Let just say she begged me from day one to let her drive it, even if it was for a block or two, I did.

Before i totalled my 944, i was already involved in two accidents prior, which totalled 3 other cars. One wasn't my fault while the other was.

My first accident i was driving my dad's pristine 1973 911 which was converted to the RSR model. I was driving down a street with a concrete center divider and another driver pushed me into it.

My second accident was in a 1973 Karman Ghia. I didnt hit the brakes fast enough, and needless to say, rolled a jeep.

In my experience with german cars, i think i'll stick to 'em. Only cars i have been in that haven't caused severe injury to me or my passengers.
