replacing idle control valve,.. what else while I'm in there?
since the intake must come off and time intensive, what else makes sense to replace at the same time?
vacuum hoses? engine temp sensor? thanks 86 944na with 94k |

Yes, the vacuum hoses and the connectors on the wires.

I would check all my vacumn hoses bout all I can think of. I am guessing your idle control valve is bad. I thought mine was bad and then tested it, it was fine but was not getting the proper voltage signal from the DME. The DME was sending voltage to make it stay closed all the time so cold starts were very rich with low rough idle till the O2 senser warmed up and leaned it back out. Actually I had to hold the throttle open tp keep it running til it warmed up a bit.

I dont know about later models, but in the early ones (83-85/1), you can take the idle control valve (or Auxiliary Air Valve) off WITHOUT pulling the manifold ...

The real problem is a vacuum leak on the intake manifold. I sprayed carb cleaner all around each intake port and then idle went super smooth. I could visually see the spray bubbling out from the gasket area... so, $10 for new gasket set and half a day work, but I may as well replace the ICV and vacuum lines/connectors while I'm there so add another $200 in parts, maybe 1 hour more work, seems worth it in the long run to know that stuff is done.

I'm in there myself, and I found my idle control valve was bad, and the vaccum hoses need replacing. I read about 700 ohm's at 60 degrees on the temp gauge for the DME, and INF ohms on the other that has two spade connectors.
Is it worth it to clean out the inside of the intake manifold? I've looked inside, and it seems pretty dirty, but not sure the best method, and if it's worth the time. |
