Hey Guys, I spent the whole day replacing my alternator with one I got on Ebay, cuz mine was making a horrible grinding noise. Anyway, after all the work it took to get the old one out and the new (used) one in, I find that it is putting out only 12 Volts when the car is on .. So I freak out and email the guy cuz I was really pissed off ...
Anyway, he claims that he sent my a 924 alternator, and that is why it is not working ... My questions: Do older 924 alternator put out less current than 90 amps? What is the part number for the 924 and 944, if different? Thanks. Ehab |

Don't know the Porsche part number off the top of my head, but since I just replaced mine - the BOSCH part number for the 2.5L 8V 924S/944NA is:
AL170X If he sent you a alternator for a 924 (and NOT a 924S) it won't work - sorry - you might be able to make a complaint for not clearly describing what he was selling Lots of luck AFJuvat |

There are different part numbers...
77-82 924/T is 063 903 017 V... 83-85/1 944 & 87-88 924S is 944 603 108 AV... while 85/2-88 944/S/T is 928 603 011 AV. |

I didn't have a number on my old alternator to compare ... but here's the number I had on the one he sent me ...
0 120 469 559 566 14V 90A which doesn't match any of Mike's numbers. The part fit in perfectly, but gave me 12.2 volts. When I tried MY alternator with HIS voltage regulator, I still got 12 V or less, which is making me think that it was a faulty regulator only ... I am now feeling very bad about not trying my own functional regulator in HIS alternator first before swapping it back out this morning ... Anywho, my old alternator is back in, and he offered to send me another unit ... so we'll see. Thanks. Ehab |

All of the alternators are different sizes.
It wouldn't be a 924 as they have a different mounting. The later 944 are bigger. Maybe it is not an alternator fault? With the engine running you should have at least 13.4 volts at the battery. Is the warning light working; if not the alternator cannot charge. Could be just the voltage regulator. |
