Boost troubles part deux:

I installed a VDO boost gauge tonight to see EXACTLY whats going on...

If I floor the car in first gear, I build no more than five pounds of boost and then the car shuts off (about 4900 RPM) all future boost until I stop the motor and restart, in which case I have boost again.

If I am already in a higher gear, say 3rd or 4th, then I can build up to 8 pounds of boost (WOT) and hold it for a second or two before the car shuts off the boost. It too will come back after a restart.

I am told the car has Autothority chips, but do not know absolutely.

Do you think it would be wise to put the stock chips in?

Is 8 pounds (less in 1st gear) enough to envoke some "saftey measure" on part of the computer?

If I put in the stock chips and the problem goes away, do you think I can use a manual boost controller to go more than 8 PSI?

How much boost does the car make factory?

Any ideas how I can keep my current setup and make more boost?

As always, thanks in advance folks, I really appreciate your knowledge and the time you take to share it!

Don

stock, the car should build ~ 11 psi, but lower in 1st (and maybe 2nd) gear.

You want aftermarket chips in your car if you plan on doing any upgrading as the stock chips will shut off boost if it goes over 15 psi (I think).

You may have the stock chips and a bad cycling valve, boost sensor, or a couple other problems. Check all of your vaccuum lines too.

You might want to ask yer question over at the 951 forum on rennlist. There are some knowledgable folks there and a lot more 951's there than here.
