A banjo bolt is usually a bolt, that is hollowed out, at the upper end where threads are not present, near the head of the bolt, there are holes drilled into the body. Then, where the holes were drilled, there was a fitting made, slightly machined out inside, that would fit up on the bolt(around where the holes were drilled) and have a port off of it to connect to a hose. It would seal off with copper/any compression ring.
These save space and are very common on european cars in general. Here in the states they are more common on diesel fuel systems. In the case of the 951, on the pipe from the turbo, there is a banjo bolt in the pipe that sends an air signal to the wastegate for opening upon higher boost. |

I read about these banjo bolts voiding anymore boost into the motor on 951s when people upgrade to aftermarket chips. Do they need a bigger bolt or a more refined one? is that why their boost gets cut off???

That's the bolt part.. the banjo part that goes around it is what gets modified by Autothority. Basicly they clog up the hole partially so air won't flow through the fitting as quickly and the wastegate will allow more boost before opening. If you want to see a banjo fitting just take a look at your power steering pump or intake manifold. There's dozens of them on the car.
This is a complete banjo fitting: ![]() The blue part is the banjo. The bolt with the hole goes through it and the washers on the top and the bottom are to seal it. ------------------ '86 951 Graphite Metallic/Tan |
