Unhappy Stripped spark plug hole options?

On cylinder 4, my spark plug goes in about half way, then stops. I've never noticed this before because the engine seemed to run fine. However, it's probably in my interest to somehow get it fixed or something. What options are available for repairing a stripped spark plug hole?

Hmmm... not sure, but that sounds quite scary... Weld up the hole and re-drill and tap it with the right thread size?

Try using a thread cleaning tool first... but the shavings will fall right into the compression chamber... Hmm... not sure

Okay, I'm not sure if it makes a difference, but it's cross threaded at the top, not stripped. The spark plug goes in at a slight angle (the tip of the spark plug isn't in the middle of the spark plug hole) and eventually it stops. The top 1/3 of the spark plug hole is shiny from being cross threaded while the rest of the threading is dirty. Heli-coil will require removing the head, right? Any other ideas besides heli-coil?

Any ideas on this thing?
http://www.europeancarweb.com/auto_tools/0402ec_tool/

I'm almost 100% sure it's cross threaded at the top 1/3 and the bottom 1/3 looks to be fairly in tact. So, maybe backing it out will work?

I also read something about heli-coiling while vacuuming through the intake or exhaust with the intake or exhaust valves open. Any ideas on that?

OK, no guarrantees, pack the hole with grease, not to much, you don't want to get to much into the cylinder, and go at it with a thread chase tap, carefully. Once you get the threads staight, use Qtips to clean up the grease, then use something like mineral spirits to clean the residue and vacuum the area repeated ly throughout the whole process to collect all the shavings. Good luck, and once again, no guarrantees.

Okay, I'm getting that back tap. One last question: 944 Turbo's have 14 mm spark plug threads, right? Thanks, just wanna make sure.

Uhhhhhh...

This is kinda scaring me.

Has the head gasket ever been changed?

If not, might I suggest another option.
Pull the head...really not that hard. Send it to a machine shop. Get new valve guides and the whole shebang done there(should be <150). New gaskets up top.

Peace of mind.

I personally would leave well enough alone until I was ready to do the job above.

Just my .02

I've used just a greased up K-D Tools (or Lisle?) thread chaser for 30 years on aluminum heads. Just leave the spark plug out and start the car. The engine's compression will blow out all the remaining chips in the hole.

Edit: Looks like this one though I don't recall it being a Performance Parts product.

Found it!

K-D tools:

14 AND 18MM SPARK PLUG OPENING THREAD CHASER
KD 730 $4.95

Clean and restore spark plug threads. Use with a 13/16" socket. Rubber ring eliminates slipping. Tool services most cars.

....at least you only cross threaded the hole.... If you chase the threads out you may get some particles but they will be so small that they shouldnt cause any havoc with the exhaust turbine...

Just go slow ...1/4 turn forward... back it out.... then feel some resistance .... 1/4 turn forward .... back it out.. etc

Hm, I was just gonna try a normal thread chaser but I'm a little it concerned that I might catch onto the cross threading and just send the bad threading further down and ruin the good threads. Is this possible/likely?

The more I read about Starr Product's Back-Tap, the more I want to try it out. Supposidly the tool is able to compress and start from the good threads at the bottom then work its way up and "repair" the bad ones at the top. This seems like a good idea since I'm worried about cross threading further down if I start from the top. Any opinions? Waste of my money or worth a try?

Here's a video that Starr Products put out about the Back-Tap:
http://www.starrproducts.com/mov/Back%20Tap.wmv

And here's a description of the product:
http://www.starrproducts.com/backtap.html

TIA,
Matt
