Grinding down early stock spacers for Late Wheels on Front
Ok. My Boxter Wheels are not quite on yet. Poor car has been on jackstands for 2 weeks. The wheels did not NEED spacers to work but they will look MUCH better with them.
I found out you must grind or machine early rear spacers to make them fit the front as the front and rear hubs are different sizes. The inside diameter or the rear spacer is fine but the ‘lip’ will not fit over the hub. An article on this is at Danno’s site (Racer X) here. http://members.rennlist.com/951_racerx/WheelsFAQ-spacers.html Here is my first round on the angle grinder. 1 hour total for the pair. ![]() ![]() The last ‘lip’ that is left is approx 2-3mm and will probably take just as long. I will post pics after. I chose grinding because A. Machining would be $60-120 B. This does not have to be that precise because there will still be ½ inch left that matches up with the hub perfectly on the spacer AND the wheel will have a bit over the hub as well. ![]()

It should be interesting what this does to the overall balance of your setup.....

17" wheels have to be hub centric so grinding the locating part off the center isn't a good idea. Make sure you check the wheel nuts frquently
as they are not supposed to locate the wheel.

Yes - longer lugs - moved back lugs to front of car
Yes- should be interesting to see balance change- + 1.25 inches overall in the back + .75 inches in the front BUT boxter fronts are only 6" so I think things will equal out. Brit - These are 16" - - The spacer should sit over the hub perfectly and the wheel should still have room to center on the hub as well by about 1/4 inch. I am hoping that will be enough. Brit - Are 17+ rims the only ones that need to be hubcentric and any idea the physics of why?

Well, I did move the front lugs to the rear as well. That is an important step.

No, all Porsche wheels from the early 70s are hubcentric. The big deal
with the change to 17" and 18" wheels was that Porsche specifically sent out a technical service bulletin about wheel tightening. At the training school it was said that the wheel nuts could not locate the wheels without hubcentric locating. With 17" and 18" wheels you have to tighten the wheels with the weight off the tire.

Very good info Brit. If I go up to 17+ I will change out to hubcentric.
I wonder if most tireshops know that you have to tighten with the weight off?

thats the greatness of working at a rim/stereo shop...I have enough contacts that I can call up and have custom spacers made (about $200 for 4) that are hubcentric to the car and to the wheel....

BTW-
I am still having problems finding the right tool to remove this small inner lip. I am going to use diamond grinding wheels on the dremel as of today. This spacers WILL be on by Saturday high noon!

The spacers work! Grinding is not for the faint of heart though.
I tried several means to get the last lip off of the spacers with no real progress. Decided to throw a Hail Mary… Got out the grinder again and carefully ground all the way in till the lip was almost gone. Filed the lip for the final ½ mm and Voila. They fit. FYI – this equals 2 hours of grinding total! You have to really WANT to do this. They are a very, very snug fit over the front hub. I am pretty sure that is why hubcentric doesn’t matter on the earlies. The boxter wheel also fits snug over the hub. Been up to 65 so far with NO VIBRATION, wobble or other undue affects. Everything seems to be great! I will take it up to 80 tonight and see what happens. So there we have it. Boxter wheels on the early. 2” spacers rear. ¾ stock to front. ![]() ![]() ![]()

Easiest solution... Turn them on a lathe

Yeh, that is the easy part. Paying $500 for a mini-lathe at Harbor Freight is the hard part!
BTW- Took it up to 90 yesterday....no wobbles no problem.
