speedometer question.
just noticed that my speedometer is not registering miles, and the trip meter is stuck on 000miles. does this mean i have to send the speedo away to be repaired, or is there a simple fix,:ie, replacing gears etc??any comments?
when i replaced all the bulbs a couple of months ago, i wish this problem had appeared then! bob.

Resetting the odometer while the car is moving breaks the brittle little plastic gears in the odo drive. Sounds like that's what happened. Is a well known VDO trait.
If you fix it yourself, the broken seals on the back of the speedo will make future buyers wary. Send it out.

hi singpilot/fr wilk. it would appear that i can fix it myself then.
my car is originally from florida, so the main reading is in mph, with smaller kph in the center.

yeah....well it would turn from time to time for few miles then stop for a few days/weeks/months....but I kept track of the maint and I was living in Germany most of the time so the MPH od really wasn't that useful....
I kinda miss that metric system actually...... |

doesn't it break if you reset it.... if it's about to break anyway ???
seems like the added torque of the reset does the final blow to the gears ??? correct me if I'm wrong...

Wait, so we're not supposed to reset the trip meter while we're driving? Tell me that isn't so.

Lets all break ours and tell prospective buyers "Thats just the way 944's Are"
To add to a few of the things iv have been told while shopping for a 944... "They also go through a quart of oil every tank of gas" "That grinding noise is normal for a porsche" "What noise? I dont hear any noise!?"

To add to that: a 911 salesguy in the showroom says: "Porsche will tell you that oil is a consumable. They burn it, you see, and the new ones leak it."

A sitting Porsche is a criminal act.

Belt tensioning I'm good with. The fact that these cars are simultaneously so tough and yet so delicate still gets me some days. Now I just need to find a girl like that...
