Oil Pump Mechanics
Hello again. Just a simple question for you.
We installed the oil pump today and all was good. However, we have a question regarding the physics/mechanics of the engine. From what we can see there is nothing to bind the crankshaft and the Oil Pump Sleeve. When the sleeve's teeth are locked inside the pump, the crank turns inside it rather smoothly. How does the pump actually work? There is no key, or notch; nothing that would indicate some sort of locking mechanism between the crankshaft and the oil pump. Stumped in PA, ExitWound |

The washer that goes on the crank shaft gets tightened against the sleeve that drives the pump.

Frankzoolu's right. Just make sure that your crank bolt is installed and torqued properly. I also use thread locker on mine for an added bit of insurance.
The crank bolt is an "important" bolt...the oil pump, timing belt, balance shaft belt, alternator/ac, and power steering systems all depend on it. |

350 lbs of torque holds the gear...

actually it is 210 NM (154 Ftlbs) for the crank bolt.

Okay, another quick question for the pump.
Which way does the oil pump main seal go in? The pictures and descriptions I've found in the factory manuals and online don't provide decent enough information. Also, the factory manual mentions a thrust washer and seal to be placed beyond the sleeve before the timing pulley. I can't find any part numbers or sizes to go by. Any help on this one too? Thanks. All of the seals should have rotational arrows.
You should be able to use the original washer that was on the shaft.

The seal (item #2) goes in with the "cup side" toward the inside. The part number, and all the other markings are on the outside.
the following 2 pictures should help. In the first picture, Item #4 is the seal. It's really just an O-ring. If i remember right, it's a blue-greenish O-ring. Part number is: 600.174.049.40 In the second picture, item #21 is the thrust washer. It's part number is 900.234.127.00 Sorry the picture quality isn't better, but that's the best quality picture the parts catalog has to offer.

Thanks a TON guys. That helps a lot. The reason I ask about the washer is because when I bought the 944, the crankshaft was outside of the car and most of the small parts were scattered in bins and bags. I am noticing missing nuts, bolts, and washers, and things as I reassemble the engine. It's the first Porsche engine we've worked on, having previously done many Chevies. Things aren't exactly the same, but close.
