Just curious, what do people sleeve the blocks with, and how does it hold up compared to the orginal nicasil coating?

Walls of cylinder are lined with a nylon-like material that is very thin. When you bore out the cylinder it needs to have a "sleeve" of some sort put into the hole.

It still blows my mind how little boring can be done to these engines.

These engines rarely need a sleeve, because of the material the block is made out of, the rings don't even wear a ridge that's real noticeable. My '84 almost spun a bearing, and the #2 rings fell out in about 15 pieces, but no ring ridge when i broke the engine apart.

BTW not to be an a$$, but just a minor clarification - the blocks are alusil, not nikasil. The implications of the difference are somewhat significant, as nikasil blocks are the ones that can react with the sulfites in some gasoline blends. BMW used them for a few years (possibly Audi and some others too, but I'd have to double-check) but eventually changed to alusil for that reason. In any event, they're damn fine engines.

Err, whoops, I know that they're alusil, and for some reason, I still typed nicasil. Bad fingers! =)
