engine rebuild cost?

My car is at a shop getting a compression test and leakdown test done tomorrow.

If by some chance It doesnt pass... or fails a leakdown test...what are the options?

And how much will this cost?

Are you doing it yourself, or would you be paying someone to do this?

Doing it yourself, it would set you back approximately $1000 - $2000 in parts and ancillary machine shop work on the heads (not including rehoning the cylinders)

Having a shop do the job gets extremely costly very quickly The act of removing and installing the engine bills out at approximately 10 hours of labor - before the engine even comes apart.

I really think its gonna pass...but Im doing tests for a few reasons...

I want to upgrade it with chips, wastegate etc. so a test makes sense i think before i start that stuff.. No sense in moding a tired engine.

The crankcase vent is really spewing oil and the shop recommended that it be tested first, to get an idea of whats going on. It was smoking a bit from the oil going through the system. Just want to make sure thats the real problem.
