what oil do you use?

When I got my first oil change I just used good old(not really old) 10w-30 but the second time I got an oil change my mechanic told me to use 20w-50.

Is that right?

I want your guy's opinions because I don't wanna ruin my engine using too heavy of oil.

Thanks

Adam

20/50 is fine dependant on the ambient temperature. We use it in 944s all the time. As long as you change the oil and filter (use the OEM filter)regularly and check the level weekly there shoudln't be a problem.

Running low on oil is probably the second cause (after timing belt breakages) of 944s becoming garden ornaments.

I first used Castrol 20/50, then I switched to Mobil ! and the closest they had was 15/50. The manual says 20/50 is fine.

Valvoline 20/50 racing oil as I seem to do a couple of DE's a month and this stuff keeps the pressure up better than any other oil I've tried...

I also use 20w 50 but, what type of wrench did you use to remove your oil filter? The spacing was so tight there has to be a special tool for removing it?

Tool? I use my hands, but if those don't work, try using a split cup, ratchet, and 6 inch extension.

There's an 'OEM' brand filter wrench sold at Autozone for ~$5 that fits our filters. I use that.

edit: credit where credit is due:

an oil filter wrench that works

I run Amsoil 20W50 in the summers, however since the local shop that sold it (for a reasonable price) shut down, I now run Mobil 1 15W50 for the summers, and 0W40 for the winters.
I find the 15W50 doesn't thin too much during hard driving when I'm on the track, yet isn't too thick for startups in the morning.

The Amsoil lead to an interesting situation.
Amsoil 20W50 is pink in color, my power steering fluid (ATF) is pink, and my coolant is pinkish-orange.... Came out one morning to find a drip on the ground, and for the first time, couldn't identify it by color!
