throwing an idea out

I was having a long talk with my boss yesterday, and discussed the possibilities of putting a 4G63 Eclipse motor into a 944. Custom mounts would have to be made (not a problem), and a custom oil pan out of aluminum (Eclipse pickup is at the front of the motor, where the steering rack and front crossmember currenty reside) to relocate the pickup to the back of the motor. An adaptor plate would be a must, and I would prolly use the clutch assembly off the Eclipse (push type clutch). Electromotive TEC 3 as management

The thing is that the motor is only 2 liters, which will shorten its length in the engine bay, allowing me to move it further back over the front wheels. With moderate boost, the car can see 350hp and around the same amount of torque. My concern is the transmission. I know the N/A trannys arent that strong, would a 951 hold up? I dont abuse the drivetrain (no clutch drops, no hard launches, no slamming the shifter)....would it hold up to me laying into it in 3rd gear without blowing up? How much horsepower have 951s put out and the trans holding it fine?

I have heard of 450 hp 951s with stock trans. Don't know how long they lasted though.

I have heard of 500hp 951's, I hear they last too. But As far as the NA tranny in your "IDEA" I think you should swap to a 951 tranny, The gear ratios are setup for a turbo and the tranny is the strongest of that type. If your gonna be pushing 350 ft/tq tehn yea ditch the NA tranny, I have already killed 3 R&P gears in my NA setup and IM no where near that kinda power.

So why drop a eclips motor in??? Why not just get a 951 or drop a 951 motor and play with that turbo??? Dont get me wrong I love to mod and play with things but as it has been said before If your gonna be pushing that kinda power your gonna need to do something about the suspension and brakes, That is if you wanted to to it safley and correctly

Also I dont think displacement has anything to do with the length of the motor, I mean look at the V8's some guys put in they are no longer then the 2.5 thats in the car stock, You might want to measure the engine first, Also the location of the bellhousing is gonna limit how close you can get the engine into the center of the car, also remeber you will need a adapter plate to match the engine with the bellhousing.

as soon as its done lol. It ran for a short time, and now its all apart again with no motor in it. Hence why Im driving the Porsche everyday. I got my hands on a digi cam after I got everything out of the car, so if you want pics of piles of stuff then you got it LOL.

There are a few reasons for swapping it in. #1 is that although a 951 is nice, part prices would kill me trying to build one($10k motor, whereas a built eclipse one could run me 2200-3000), and its just a pain to work on (the whole way the exhaust manifold is set up and the downpipe and turbo and stuff scares me away).

The other thing is that I know a 4G63 motor inside and out, and parts are readily sourced for it, and I like to be different

A 4G63 is a very versitile and obtainable engine. It's a good engine for people with a budget not wanting to push too much power. My experiences with a 4G63 show to be unpleasing, much like my experiences with a 944. I have a coupel friends running AWD DSMs and well, they're nothign overly impressive. They're a fine engine if you only want to run high 13's and make ~300 WHP, but anything more extreme than that just yeilds bad results. It's a belt driven engine, interference, and a waste of time IMHO. If you are looking to do a budget swap I would reccomend a Nissan SR20DET. Readily available, wiring harness that is pretty straight forward, the bottom end is good for 500+ RWHP, and it's a chain driven engine. A rotary would even be a better candidate than a 4G63 if you ask me, but I really don't like Mitsubishi.

This is all my opinion, and nothing but my opinion. If you don't like it then whatever, but it's what I have to say.

yeah i have no prob with it...to each their own . A rotary would be cool, but I have no knowledge of it, and Im scared stiff of rotaries tempers. That and their stupid loud (but flames out the exhaust at will is the shizzle).

4g motors are one of the stoutest motors Ive come across. Cast Iron block, aluminum head. Ive built many a 400hp motor that have been living 2 plus years so far. On the other hand, ive seen SR20DETs do little else than maybe a boost controller and fuel mods, and spin a rod bearing . I used to be a nissan fag, but after I watched the whole drift thing and nissan swaps becoming the next 'honda', I kinda fell out of it. I wanted a 240sx with a SR20 like 6-7 years ago, when hardly anyone was doing them.

Besides, I cant shoot for more than 350-400hp in the Porsche anyway. I dont know how long a 951 trans would last under that abuse

you would need an S2 tranny and even then I'm not sure it would really hold the abuse for long unless you switching in a cryo'd R&P. Hell while you are at it why not use the AWD tranny from a DSM and the either cap the front drives off or make an awd 944. That would be HOT!!!
